Examines children's social development from birth to age twelve. Attention to influences of family, peers, schools, television on aspects of social development including emotional attachments, self-concept, achievement motivation, sex-role development, social competence, aggression, and moral development. Throughout, attention is also given to major theoretical perspectives (psychoanalytic, ethological, behavior-genetic, cognitive, social learning, ecological/cultural), research methodology, and applied and policy implications of research. Readings focus on children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Prerequisites: PSY 103, PSY 104, or PSY 221. One course.
