RA position at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School

The Gaab Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital is looking for two full-time Research Assistants for a study that aims to validate a tablet-based early literacy screener. This includes subject recruitment which will include close interaction with pediatricians and public and private schools in the Boston area, scheduling of pediatric research subjects, administration of standardized assessments, scoring and interpretation of standardized assessments, database maintenance, implementation and maintenance of analysis software; data analyses and administrative work (e.g., preparation of internal review board proposals). We are in particular looking for candidates who have experience with the administration of standardized (literacy) tests in young children (preschool/kindergarten age).

The position is ideal for anyone considering future graduate study in cognitive (developmental) science, developmental psychology, education, computer science, cognitive science or neuroscience. Bachelor's Degree in computer science, psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, math, or related field required. Comfort with a heterogeneous computing environment (Linux/Unix, Mac, and Windows) preferred; knowledge of psychological experiment software (E Prime, Presentation, etc.) helpful. Prior experience with working in a school environment would be very helpful. Demonstrable pre-existing interest in developmental psychology, (special) education, speech and language pathology desired. Must be self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and must like working with infants, children and families. Start date ASAP. Laboratory Coordinator Postition-Charlottesville (Angeline LIllard's laboratory)

The University of Virginia’s Early Development Laboratory, directed by Angeline Lillard, anticipates hiring a full-time laboratory coordinator (with a preference to applicants who are interested in staying for at least 2 years) to help with studies of children’s social and cognitive development, particularly focusing on pretend play, and Montessori education. The position entails many aspects of lab management including recruitment, design and running of studies, working with graduate students and post-docs, managing undergraduate research assistants, entering data, overseeing materials and records management, purchasing off grants, interfacing with office personnel, and so on.

Ability to work well with people of a range of ages and backgrounds, creative problem-solving skills, high energy and a strong work ethic, and being extremely well-organized and detail-oriented are important credentials. Prior child development laboratory experience is expected. To overlap several weeks with the current coordinator, the new hire will begin work in late July.

This position is funded by the NIH (for up to 2 years), and involves coordinating and executing the transcription and coding of a very large audio-visual dataset. The goal is for the audio-visual data, its metadata, and its partial transcription to be made freely available to other researchers via Databrary. My lab focuses on language and social development, and individuals who share these interests are especially encouraged to apply.

About the dataset: over the course of two years, we collected 3 hrs/wk of audio-visual data from head-mounted cameras worn by infants/children in their homes. We began recording at age 6-8 months, and ended recording around age 2.5 y; the dataset is longitudinal. We now have hundreds of hours of naturalistic in-home recordings from the infant's/child's perspective. We also collected cognitive, social, and linguistic data from the children on a monthly basis. This is an exceptionally rich dataset, and we are seeking applicants to help archive these data so that other researchers can access them.

About the position:

The primary responsibilities of this individual include:  - Transcribing large quantities of audio and visual content.  - Entering and organizing numerical, audio, and visual data.  - Light-touch editing of audio and visual data (bleeping, blurring).  - File organization.  - Ensuring compliance of transcriptions and audiovisual data with ethical guidelines.  - Creating and implementing protocols for data entry, transcription, and data storage.  - Management of student workers involved in the project. 

Laboratory Coordinator Position—Mount Holyoke College

The Relationships, Attachment, and Development Lab, directed by Dr. KC Haydon at the Mount Holyoke College Department of Psychology and Education, seeks a full-time lab coordinator.

The lab coordinator will assist with an NSF-funded study of links between self-regulation, conflict, and sleep disruption in adult couples. The lab uses behavioral observation, physiological, interview, survey, and experience sampling methods. Duties include assisting with participant recruitment, data collection, coding, and analysis. Administrative responsibilities include managing the data collection calendar, overseeing interview transcription, ordering supplies, assisting with annual reports and documentation, and coordinating undergraduate research assistant schedules. The lab coordinator may also attend conferences and contribute to preparation of scientific publications.

The position is ideally suited to a recent college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, family social science, or a related field who is seeking additional research experience before going on to graduate school. The position requires strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills; ability to work independently; emotional maturity and sound judgment; cultural competency; and interest in social contexts of stress and relationship science. Data collection will often occur on evenings and weekends; scheduling flexibility is a must. The lab coordinator should be comfortable facilitating conflict discussions with diverse adult community members, as well as working closely with undergraduate student research assistants. The position requires use of SPSS, R, and MPlus; expertise in at least one of these statistical packages and a willingness to learn others is a must.

Clinical Research Coordinators at Massachusetts General Hospital

Massachusetts General Hospital Dauten Family Center for Bipolar Treatment Innovation Clinical Research Coordinator Position

The Massachusetts General Hospital Dauten Family Center for Bipolar Treatment Innovation (formerly the Bipolar Clinic and Research Program) is seeking applicants for a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) position. The aim of the program is to evaluate psychiatric and psychosocial treatments for bipolar disorder, to learn more about the causes and general course of this disorder, and to investigate the pathophysiology of the condition with neuroimaging and other biological markers. Our program participates in large-scale, multi-site, NIMH, industry, and privately-sponsored initiatives.

The CRC will manage and conduct a full range of research and clinical activities within the program. The CRC will assist in conducting clinical studies with the clinical and research staff. Responsibilities include structured patient interviews, patient recruitment, data collection and management, grant preparation, Institutional Review Board correspondence, phlebotomy (drawing blood), as well as other key administrative tasks. The CRC will also be offered the opportunity to assist with data analysis and preparation of poster presentations, symposiums, and manuscripts. The CRC will also answer triage phone calls, conduct phone screens, participate in case reviews to determine patient’s eligibility and make referrals. A key component of the position includes assisting in grant proposals for future clinical trials. The CRC will liaise with Research Management at Massachusetts General Hospital, the funding agency, as well as help prepare aspects of the proposal.

The primary research projects the CRC will work on may include, but are not limited to psychosocial interventions (e.g., mindfulness-based, cognitive behavioral, lifestyle changes), medication-based trials (e.g., new medications, dose-response, examination of side effects), online and mobile phone based studies, as well as a transcranial laser therapy study pilot testing a near infrared LED device. Currently, a major project within our program is developing the MoodNetwork (www.moodnetwork.org), a patient-centered online initiative aimed at building a community of 50,000 individuals with mood disorders to conduct comparative effectiveness studies. Thus, if you have an interest and/or special expertise in web interventions (e.g., website development, design, online assessment and recruitment, use of social media), please mention this in your cover letter. Please note that interest and expertise in managing web content and social media outlets is a plus, but not a requirement or necessary for this position.

A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts is required. A strong background in psychology, biology, and/or health sciences is preferred. Prior research, statistical, and/or clinical experience is strongly recommended. The CRC will collaborate with other members of the research team, faculty and staff of the Dauten Family Center, but will also be expected to take initiative and work well independently. Excellent attention to detail, organization, strong interpersonal skills, great writing skills and being able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously is a must. Candidates should have knowledge of basic statistical methods. Due to the deadline sensitive nature of many projects, the pace of work may be demanding at times and requires prioritization.

This position provides valuable experience for candidates interested in applying to graduate schools in clinical psychology or medical school. Research lab coordinator position at the University of Iowa

The Developmental Psychopathology Lab at the University of Iowa (Director: Dr. Isaac Petersen) is looking for a research lab coordinator to assist in research studies examining the mechanisms in the development of externalizing behavior problems (e.g., aggression, conduct problems), self-regulation, and school readiness in young children, with special emphasis on neural mechanisms (EEG/ERP).  Responsibilities include participant recruitment, scheduling, conducting batteries of neural and behavioral testing with children, data management and analysis, coordination of research assistants, and performing other research tasks as coordinator of the research team.  Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related discipline, substantial research or work experience with young children, and experience using software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.  Experience with EEG/ERP is highly desirable but not required.  Experience with computer software such as REDCap, R, and E-Prime is desirable but not required.  The initial appointment will be for one year beginning in Summer 2018, with the possibility of renewal for a 2nd year depending on performance and available funding.

PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL EVALUATOR, McGovern Institute for Brain Research, to administer and score standardized cognitive and language assessments in children, adolescents, and adults; and train and supervise colleagues to administer and score selected tests. Bilingual Parent-Child Specialist position at NYU School of Medicine

We are seeking an Spanish-English bilingual parent-child specialist to work for a parent intervention program and related behavioral research projects in the Department of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine. This program is designed to improve child development outcomes in at-risk populations and is being administered in the context of randomized controlled trials at Bellevue Hospital Center (Manhattan, NY) and in the context of a clinical program at Woodhull Medical Center (Brooklyn, NY), and other sites in NYC to be determined.

About the position:

The parent-child specialist will administer a behavioral parenting program designed to improve child development outcomes in at-risk populations.  The program is a relationship-based intervention with parents and their children (birth-5) that takes place in the pediatric clinic, is offered for free to low-income parents, and is being studied as part of a research program.

Specifically, this individual will be responsible for:

Primary tasks:

Providing the parenting intervention program (Video Interaction Project) to parents of infants and young children, which involves:

o   Meeting with parents and children

o   Providing structured guidance about child development

o   Providing structured tips to parents about reading, playing, and interacting with their child

o   Videotaping the parent and child playing together, then providing feedback and positive reinforcement to the parent about this video

o   Maintaining records of family participation in the program

o   Building rapport with families, including coordinating with parents and tracking/scheduling upcoming program visits

Overseeing operational aspects of the parenting program

Assistance with tasks related to the research study, including recruiting families, consenting families, and collecting participant data

Research Study Assistant, Labs of Cognitive Neuroscience, Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard School of Medicine

The Faja Lab within the Laboratories of Cognitive Neuroscience (LCN) at Boston Children’s Hospital is seeking a Research Assistant for a new NIMH-funded project examining the emergence of executive function difficulties in young children with ASD relative to children with developmental delays or no developmental concerns. Research in the LCN is generally dedicated to furthering our understanding of brain and cognitive development in children diagnosed with or at risk for various developmental disorders. Through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, we aim to drive the science forward as rapidly as possible, so that we can translate what we learn into earlier identification, improved therapies, and better outcomes for children and families affected by developmental disorders. Children’s Hospital of Boston is ranked as the top Children’s Hospital in the United States and is committed research and to building a diverse workforce. The Research Assistant will work primarily on a project that will examine biological and behavioral markers associated with executive and social functioning in preschool aged children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), developmental delays, and no developmental concerns. The project will use electrophysiology, behavioral, clinical, and parent report measures in a group of children who are participating at multiple time points. Responsibilities will include recruiting and scheduling participants, running experimental study sessions, administering EEG measures, behaviorally assisting children during visits, coordinating collection of surveys from parents, as well as data entry and management. This project is a longitudinal study that requires a high level of data integrity. The research assistant may also be responsible for coordinating and training research interns. Finally, the research assistant will contribute to data processing, scoring, and cleaning and will have the opportunity to assist with analysis.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, or related field, as well as a 2-year commitment to the position
  • Availability for flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends to facilitate visits
  • Previous professional experience with children, including at least one year of experience working in a research setting

Lab Manager Position in the Mind Perception and Morality Lab at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Dr. Kurt Gray is recruiting a full-time lab manager for the Mind Perception and Morality Lab, starting in Summer or Fall 2017.  The MPM lab studies how people see the minds of others, and how this "mind perception" underlies our most crucial moral judgments. This position is ideal for students interested in gaining more experience prior to applying to graduate school in social psychology, organizational behavior, or similar fields.  

Responsibilities

The lab manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily research and administrative tasks of the lab. The lab manager’s primary task will be overseeing a multi-year NSF funded project on ethics in the workplace. They will also take care of administrative duties such as completing IRBs, ordering supplies, managing RA schedules, and organizing participant payments. The lab manager will be encouraged to develop their own research lines related to mind perception and/or morality if they so desire.

Qualifications

Applicants must be conscientious and have good attention to detail. They must also like people - this is a social psychology lab, after all.  Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field of behavioral science or philosophy. They must also have experience with SPSS, Qualtrics, and Excel. Previous experience with running behavioral studies is a plus.
