The APA Internal Internship Program (IIP) is coordinated through the APA Education Directorate. The Education directorate enhances the quality of teaching and learning outcomes, encounters the demands of a multiracial society through education and training, and seeks to increase financial and policy support for education and training.

Summer Scholar Counselor at Children’s Mercy

Children’s Mercy (located in the Kansas City metro area) announces summer scholar Counselor (typically undergraduate students) and Lead (typically graduate students) Counselor positions for our Summer Treatment Program (STP). The STP is an award winning, evidence-based program for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) developed by William Pelham, Ph.D. and associates. The STP has been listed in SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. The Children’s Mercy STP is directed by Children’s Mercy ADHD Specialty Clinic Director of Psychological Services, Carla Counts Allan, Ph.D., and co-directed by Children’s Mercy Psychologists, Trista Perez Crawford, Ph.D. and Simone Sherman Moody, Ph.D. 

Counselors and Lead Counselors will receive approximately 360 hours of face-to-face clinical experience working with children with ADHD and related behavior problems. Counselors are assigned to groups of 10-15 children, with 4-5 counselors per group. Counselors implement behavior modification procedures for sports, social skills training, art, and academic activities. Counselors will provide feedback to children and parents and record behavioral data for children in their groups. They also receive daily performance feedback from experienced staff members who provide live supervision. There will be one Lead Counselor for each group. Lead Counselors will participate in counselor responsibilities in addition to overseeing the duties of the counselors in their group.

Activities take place outdoors and counselors will be involved in recreational activities throughout the day; this requires knowledge of rules/fundamentals of represented sports. Counselors will serve as Sport Leaders and will plan and implement skill drills to improve children’s performance. Previous experience in sports participation, refereeing, or coaching children is preferred.

Counselors must be available to work from May 25, 2017 through July 28, 2017. The beginning of employment will include a multi-day training session. Hired counselors will be responsible for reading the STP manual and being familiar with its contents prior to beginning employment.

Counselor hours of employment are from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Counselors also work until 8:30 PM one evening/week while parents participate in weekly parent training groups. Counselors and lead counselors are paid an hourly wage with overtime benefits commensurate with their experience and position requirements.

Undergraduate and graduate level students interested in Clinical Psychology or Pediatrics are encouraged to apply. Experience gained at the STP may also be beneficial in preparation for careers in education, mental health, physical education, psychiatry, recreational therapy, behavior analysis, social work, and counseling and can serve as an opportunity to obtain a recommendation for work or graduate school. Positions are competitive and offers will be made until positions are filled. Paid summer research internship: Child Development Lab, College of Staten Island

    Summer Internship: University of Delaware Child's Play Lab

    The Child’s Play, Learning and Development Lab, under the direction of Dr. Roberta Golinkoff at the University of Delaware, invites undergraduate students and graduating seniors to apply for an unpaid summer internship! Our laboratory, funded by federal grants, focuses on how children acquire language, develop early mathematical and spatial concepts, and learn through play.

    Summer Internship-Center for Educational Improvement

    The Center for Educational Improvement is a non-profit organization in VA that conducts research and professional development to improve schools. We are seeking interns for the summer to assist with 6 areas: heart centered learning (mindfulness, compassion and social emotional development), executive functioning, trauma, poverty, reducing text anxiety, and improving school disciplinary policies. We are interested in the relationship between improving children’s executive functions and their well-being and improvement in academic achievement. We also focus on practical application in schools and consider the role of school administrators as well as teachers and ancillary staff. 

    The internships can be virtual, or if you live in the DC area, we meet weekly. Most interns work 15-20 hours a week for at least 9-12 weeks.  Interns assist with conducting literature reviews, preparing presentations, analyzing data, writing proposals, and writing blog posts and eNewsletter articles.     About us:

    The Language Learning Lab at Boston College (L3@BC) opened in January of 2016. Our research sits at the intersection between linguistics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and psychology. Our strategy is to leverage new and emerging technologies to address previously unanswerable scientific questions. Methodologically, the lab uses a number of well-established methods, such as judgment studies, eye-tracking, and ERPs. However, we are particularly interested in exploring and exploiting new and emerging methods. One such method is testing tens or even hundreds of thousands of children and adults over the Internet, and in doing so being able to study questions that were previously out of reach.

    The Gaab Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital is looking for a Research Assistant for a number of new projects examining language and reading development from infancy to adolescence. This includes subject recruitment for pediatric research studies (for English and Spanish speaking families) which will include close interaction with pediatricians in the Boston area, scheduling of pediatric research subjects, database maintenance, implementation and maintenance of analysis software; pediatric testing (including MRI/fMRI scanning of young children and infants) and data analyses (psychometrics, psychophysics and structural/functional magnetic imaging), stimuli design and administrative work (e.g., preparation of internal review board proposals). We are in particular looking for someone who is bilingual (English-Spanish) and who has experience with the administration of standardized tests (in English and Spanish).

    The position is ideal for anyone considering future graduate study in cognitive (developmental) neuroscience, developmental psychology, education, computer science, cognitive science or neuroscience. Bachelor's Degree in computer science, psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, math, or related field required. Comfort with a heterogeneous computing environment (Linux/Unix, Mac, and Windows) as well as some programming experience preferred; knowledge of psychological experiment software (E Prime, Presentation, etc.) and/or fMRI analyses software helpful. The lab studies the development of executive functioning, investigating how children learn to achieve goals by planning ahead, stopping themselves from doing things they shouldn’t do, flexibly switching from one activity to another, and solving problems. The lab also explores social and contextual factors that shape the development of executive function, and implications for intervention.

    The Behavioral Ethics Lab (BeLab), led by Dr. Cristina Bicchieri, is seeking to hire a highly skilled and motivated individual to work as a full-time research assistant beginning in the summer of 2017. Dr. Bicchieri is an expert in social norms and conducts research at the intersection of philosophy, economics, and psychology. Our group includes behavioral economists, psychologists, network analysts, game theorists, applied mathematicians, and philosophers. This is an excellent position for those who are seeking to be exposed to a vibrant research environment, for example in preparation of a graduate degree or a research career in the private sector. The research specialist would help out with many elements of our lab's research activity. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) programming lab and online economics experiments and surveys, collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data, as well as writing up results.

    18-month RA for LuCiD project in Lancaster

    We invite applications for an 18-month Research Associate position in child language acquisition, to work with Dr. Silke Brandt (Department of Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster University) and Professor Anna Theakston (Division of Human Communication, Development & Hearing, School of Health Sciences, University of Manchester).

    The role involves conducting experimental studies of language acquisition and cognitive development with young children, and arranging outreach events for parents and practitioners in the wider community. The project is on children’s implicit and explicit understanding of false belief and their acquisition of epistemic markers. We are looking for a highly-motivated person with an undergraduate degree, and preferably also a postgraduate degree, in linguistics, psychology, cognitive science or a related subject; with experience in conducting experimental studies with young children and their caregivers; with excellent communication and organisational skills; and with experience in ethical issues in psychological research with children. Experience with eye-tracking would be a plus.

    Developmental Neuroimaging Lab Research Assistant Position, Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey

    A research assistant position is available in the Psychology Department at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. The Mathematics, Reasoning and Learning Lab (mrlab.rutgers.edu) studies the cognitive neuroscience of mathematics learning, with applications to typical and atypical development, such as mathematical learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. A key feature of our research is combining functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with outside-the-scanner training paradigms.

    Responsibilities will include data collection from child and adult research participants in a behavioral and functional brain imaging setting, contacting and scheduling research participants and their families, managing institutional review board (IRB) protocols, and data analysis.

    Requirements include spoken and written proficiency in English; a minimum of a bachelor-level degree (e.g., BA or BS), preferably in psychology, mathematics education, neuroscience, computer science, engineering, biology, or a related field; and willingness to make a 2-year commitment. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in cognitive neuroscience research with human participants, are proficient with the Linux computing environment, have used presentation software such as E-prime or PsychoPy, and can program in a scripting language such as Matlab or Python. Prior experience with children, including children with learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorders, is desired.

    Gregory Aarons, Ph.D. of the UC San Diego Psychiatry Department is currently seeking a Research and Evaluation Associate to assist with research and evaluation studies examining novel service delivery strategies in behavioral health, criminal justice, and social service settings.

    The implementation of evidence-based practice into real-world human service settings is an important priority for improving the quality of services and outcomes for individuals and families. Identifying the factors that facilitate successful service implementation and the attainment of desired outcomes requires investigation into the characteristics of and inter-relationships between service delivery strategies, service recipients, service providers, and the organizations and systems within which they are embedded. Multiple ongoing research and evaluation studies utilize quantitative and quantitative methods to develop detailed service assessments and improvement recommendations for behavioral health and criminal justice service settings within San Diego County and throughout the State of California. Data sources include large administrative data sets as well as original data collected from service recipients, service providers, and administrators.  

    Under supervision, the incumbent will function as a Research and Evaluation Associate in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry who will provide support for all phases of the research and evaluation process for one or more studies involving behavioral health, physical health, and/or related social service and criminal justice organizations and systems. Under supervision, the incumbent will be an active member of the research team and assist in literature reviews, study design, measurement, data collection, data management, data analysis, and manuscript/report/presentation preparation as needed. The incumbent will also support study administration tasks such as preparing IRB documentation, coordinating and participating in meetings and assisting with other study responsibilities as needed.

    Summer Research Mentoring Program in Developmental Science      

    This summer, Dr. Elizabeth Simpson and her team will be leading a Summer Research Mentoring Program, funded by the National Science Foundation. Students will be compensated $1,800 to work 20 hours per week over the course of this of this 9-week program.

    The Social Cognition Lab studies the development of social behavior in infants, including neonatal imitation and face perception.     Qntfy is looking to recruit up to 10 psychology students interested to gain research experience in computational clinical psychology. Qntfy is a psychology and computer science startup that uses machine learning methods to quantify psychological phenomena, detect mental illness and prevent suicidality based on digital life data. Qntfy’s work has been featured in Scientific American, Mashable, and The Mighty. Qntfy routinely publishes its findings in peer-reviewed academic venues, some of which can be found here. Interns will spend 5 - 10 hrs per week working with a research associate to detect signs of psychological disorders and/or suicidality based on social media data. This internship is unpaid and educational in nature, and all tasks can be completed remotely.

    Objectives & Responsibilities This program will equip interns with research skills unique to computational psychology. These include developing annotation schemes to detect psychological constructs from social media and annotating social media data, a key task in the development of machine learning models. Interns will also gain significant topic knowledge and engage with experts in computational psychology during weekly research meetings. Opportunities may also be available for interns to produce an academic paper and conduct an independent research project related to their current studies. Interns must dedicate 5 - 10 hrs per week to the internship over the course of 12 weeks.
