The Learning and Development Lab directed by Dr. Elissa Newport has an open position for a full-time (40 hours/week) undergraduate research assistant (RA) for the summer with opportunity to continue part-time next academic year.  The RA will provide support for ongoing research studies investigating how adults and children learn languages and how language is processed in the brain. The Faja Lab within the Laboratories of Cognitive Neuroscience (LCN) at Boston Children’s Hospital is seeking a Research Assistant for a new NIMH-funded project examining the emergence of executive function difficulties in young children with ASD relative to children with developmental delays or no developmental concerns. Research in the LCN is generally dedicated to furthering our understanding of brain and cognitive development in children diagnosed with or at risk for various developmental disorders. Through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, we aim to drive the science forward as rapidly as possible, so that we can translate what we learn into earlier identification, improved therapies, and better outcomes for children and families affected by developmental disorders. Children’s Hospital of Boston is ranked as the top Children’s Hospital in the United States and is committed research and to building a diverse workforce. The Research Assistant will work primarily on a project that will examine biological and behavioral markers associated with executive and social functioning in preschool aged children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), developmental delays, and no developmental concerns. The project will use electrophysiology, behavioral, clinical, and parent report measures in a group of children who are participating at multiple time points. Responsibilities will include recruiting and scheduling participants, running experimental study sessions, administering EEG measures, behaviorally assisting children during visits, coordinating collection of surveys from parents, as well as data entry and management. This project is a longitudinal study that requires a high level of data integrity. The research assistant may also be responsible for coordinating and training research interns. Finally, the research assistant will contribute to data processing, scoring, and cleaning and will have the opportunity to assist with analysis.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, or related field, as well as a 2-year commitment to the position
  • Availability for flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends to facilitate visits
  • Previous professional experience with children, including at least one year of experience working in a research setting
  • Computer skills including working knowledge of PC and Mac operating systems, basic statistics software and basic experimental presentation and collection software

General Description:

The Social and Moral Development Laboratory at the University of Maryland, supervised by Professor Melanie Killen, is recruiting a lab manager.  The lab manager will be responsible for overseeing research projects on topics related to morality, the development of fairness and equality concepts, prejudice and bias in childhood, intergroup friendships, mental state knowledge in the context of morality and intergroup relationships, and peer-based social inclusion and exclusion.

Responsibilities:

Data recruitment (contacting school administrators for participation agreements, obtaining consent forms, and managing compensations for school participants), data collection (administering protocols to children and adolescents), coordination of communication with the lab team, instrument development, submission of IRB protocol forms, management of the lab and the lab website, coordination with the university lab preschool research staff, and general execution of research projects.  The lab manager will work closely with the P.I., graduate students, and undergraduate research assistants.

The Vilardaga Lab in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Duke’s Center for Addiction Science Technology (CfAST) is looking to hire a full-time Clinical Research Specialist (CRS) to work on a research study evaluating the feasibility and usability of smoking cessation smartphone apps for those with serious mental illness.

JOB PURPOSE: The CRS is responsible for conducting study procedures in human subjects in accordance with Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and assisting other research members to meet study goals.

DESCRIPTION: The lab’s core vision is expanding the effectiveness and reach of behavioral health for those in most need by creating meaningful technologies for behavior change. The work sits at the intersection of several content areas, primarily mindfulness and acceptance-based behavior change interventions, mental health and addiction. To address those content areas, the lab applies a range of methods, including user-centered design of mHealth interventions, single case design methods and clinical trials methodology.

At present, the lab’s primary research project is the ‘Quit on the Go’ Trial which is currently evaluating two smoking cessation apps, Learn to Quit and NCI QuitGuide, in an expected sample of 90 subjects with serious mental illness (schizophrenia, schizoaffective, bipolar, and recurring depressive disorders). Over the course of 4-months, enrolled subjects use each assigned app, receive Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), technical coaching and attend follow-up appointments. Data collection comes from different sources, including diagnostic assessments, biometrics, self-report surveys, Google Analytics and User Experience (UX) interviews.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• (35%) Participant Management - Recruitment, screening, participant tracking, phone calls, scheduling appointments, dispensing and recording compensation, provider and clinic outreach

• (35%) Study Activities - Consenting, administering psychometric (psychiatric diagnosis, cognitive functioning, psychological functioning, mental status exam) and biometric (CO, urine pregnancy test) assessments, phone and app orientation and set-up, conducting qualitative interviews and coaching sessions (in-person and phone calls), administering study drug/smoking cessation products, monitoring and documenting adverse events

• (15%) Data Management – Entering and managing participant information in Microsoft Access, entering data into REDCap, recording and storing audio from interviews/coaching sessions, assist transcribing interviews and conducting thematic analysis from interviews

• (10%) Scientific Reporting and Grant Writing – Copy-editing, conducting literature reviews, create and present poster presentations, possible co-authoring opportunities on publications, assist in preparing presentations for various audiences

• (5%) Administrative - Take meeting minutes, managing paper files, keeping study and lab binders well stocked, inventorying office and lab supplies, advise on file system (e.g. shared drive) organization

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to social and/or behavioral sciences

EXPERIENCE: Two or more years of experience working in a research lab interacting with human subjects, including consent and conducting research interviews.

Any relevant work/volunteer experience with underserved populations, especially those with mental health disorders. Previous clinical experience in mental health settings is a plus.

Familiarity with psychometric assessments including diagnostic interviews.

Proficiency using software applications including MS Access, REDCap, Bibliographic software (Zotero).

Causality and Mind Lab at Brown University and Providence Children’s Museum Researcher

The Causality and Mind Lab at Brown University (P.I. David Sobel) and Providence Children’s Museum (PCM) are seeking a Museum Researcher for a National Science Foundation-funded project investigating belief revision in early childhood and children's learning processes. The Museum Researcher will engage in research related to the project as well as serve as a liaison between the Causality and Mind Lab and PCM. The Researcher will also contribute to other Museum-based research projects at PCM.

This is a full-time position at 37.5 hours/week, split between PCM and Brown University; 10 hours/week for PCM and 27.5 hours/week for Brown University.  Benefits are available through Brown University.

The Researcher will manage recruitment, administration and treatment of research participants in accordance with IRB protocols, organize recruiting efforts, research and prepare appropriate experimental materials, collaborate with P.I.s to create coding schemes, and coordinate implementation of coding schemes with project partners.  The Researcher will also liaise between PCM and Brown and communicate project goals and findings.  At PCM, the Museum Researcher will support the Museum’s research agenda, lead evaluation efforts in exhibits and programs, lend expertise to interdepartmental research projects, document research and assist in dissemination.

Purpose and Main Duties

In collaboration with University College London, Kings College London and the MRC Unit The Gambia, we have been funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to conduct The Brain Imaging for Global Health (BRIGHT, http://globalfnirs.org) project. This prospective longitudinal study that aims to examine the link between early life risk factors, such as undernutrition and poverty, on infant neural and cognitive development. This is a multi-site project with researchers based in London (Birkbeck and UCL), Cambridge and the MRC unit in Keneba (in the Gambia). Infants in the Gambia and UK are tested on a range of measures including fNIRS, EEG, eye-tracking, and behavioural assessments from birth to the age of 24 months with the aim of developing “brain function for age reference curves” of development, exploring individual differences in infancy and investigating how these relate to early life risk factors.

Candidate Requirements

The research assistant will be responsible for the implementation and day to day management of new language measures in the Gambia and UK. This will include visiting participants’ homes to fit them with the recording devices, conducting interviews with caregivers, and general data management. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the general testing, quality control checks and analysis procedures that are conducted within the BRIGHT study.

The main site for the UK study is Cambridge, and so the post-holder will primarily be based at the University of Cambridge where Dr Sarah Lloyd-Fox is an Affiliated Lecturer. The post-holder will also be expected to regularly travel to the Gambia to oversee training and data collection at our second site.

We seek a full-time research study coordinator to manage a very active research program at the Project on Child Development (http://www.childdevelopment.northwestern.edu/). Our research examines early language and conceptual development in infants from 3 months to 3 years, and this position involves a healthy mix of research and administrative duties. The coordinator will work in close collaboration with a dynamic, interactive lab team that includes Professor Waxman, students (both undergraduate and PhD level), and postdocs in the lab.

The research coordinator will be responsible for conducting and helping to oversee experimental procedures, coding behavioral data, managing data files, and conducting analyses. The coordinator will be responsible for interacting with families and infants who visit the lab, conducting informed consent and debriefing procedures, and maintaining the laboratory’s established human subject procedures.

Basic Qualifications: Candidates must have a background in cognitive psychology, developmental psychology and/or linguistics (with a specific interest in development), confidence with technology, confidence with writing, and experience with infants or toddlers. Also required are excellent organizational abilities, excellent social skills, and a friendly, team-leading personality.

Additional Qualifications: One year or more of psychology research work, ability to interact with infants and their parents, and familiarity with programming software (e.g., MATLAB, R) are all very relevant skills, but most can be learned on the job. Experience with eye tracking and EEG is strongly preferred. Strong writing skills are important, as the coordinator collaborates on publications and grant reports. Attention to detail and an ability to multi-task are also essential.

With four official languages, the linguistic environment of Singapore is globally unique, with rich, inter-generational bilingualism in diverse languages, with diverse writing systems. This landscape provides unique advantages for Singapore’s progress in an increasingly globalised world. It also presents unique challenges in education, as teaching practices established in monolingual communities (like the US, the UK and Australia) may be poorly suited to the needs of Singapore’s bilingual learners. This research will evaluate how different patterns of exposure influence bilingual and biliterate language development in three research streams. We will record language spoken around infants and toddlers in the home, and evaluate patterns of language used in the homes of Singaporean caregivers from birth to 2 years; We will investigate how different language mixes contribute to the sensitivity, flexibility, and speed of toddlers’ aural-language skills; and we will investigate the link between early language skills and learning to read, in a group of children evaluated for their early aural and pre-reading skills pre-kindergarten, and their reading and brain network connectivity after school entry. The Child Development Laboratory, http://www.cdl.umd.edu, at the University of Maryland is inviting outstanding and motivated undergraduates to apply for a summer internship program. This competitive program presents a unique opportunity to work in our laboratory alongside graduate students and post-docs, on one of many ongoing research projects.  Current projects include the Temperament Over Time Study (examining social-emotional outcomes in children who vary in temperament), the Mirror Neuron Project (examining EEG activity during action-perception experiments), Origins of Infant Temperament (neuroimaging), Bench to Bedside (fNIRs), and a handful of individual graduate student studies. Summer interns will participate in weekly research meetings and will gain exposure to a range of methods and experimental paradigms. This is a volunteer position, but those applying are encouraged to seek outside funding from their own university. 

Research focus

Research at the CDL focuses on multiple facets of socio-emotional development spanning ages from infancy to early adulthood. We study cognitive, social, and emotional processes and are interested in the observation and measurement of attention, memory, as well as emotion expression, and social experience. We use multiple methods including behavioral and physiological assessments (psychophysiology: RSA, PEP, SCR; electrophysiology: EEG and ERP; brain imaging: fMRI, fNIRs).

Requirements

-Background in psychology, biology, or a related field

-Must be able to commit at least 15-20 hours/week for 8 weeks between June 1st and August

-Flexible schedule (must be available on some weekends)

-Basic computer skills, detail oriented, reliable, and cooperative

-Experience with children is preferred

Community Psychiatry PRIDE is a dissemination and implementation research lab that has a special focus on reducing mental health disparities among racially and ethnically diverse individuals. Much of our work takes place in the Chelsea community, which has significant immigrant, refugee and impoverished populations. The overarching mission of PRIDE is to bridge the gap between science and practice by bringing evidence-based treatments to the communities with the greatest need.

PRIDE exists at a unique intersection between research and practice. We are currently seeking a small team of volunteer research assistants for a 10-week internship program during summer 2018. As an intern, your work has the potential to support the reduction of health disparities across Massachusetts and beyond. You will work with Dr. Luana Marques, as well as with the clinical research team in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the lab. Intern activities include, but are not limited to:

• Conducting and summarizing extensive and ongoing literature reviews for project development

• Bibliographical support for publications

• Data entry and analysis using a variety of statistical software packages

Full-Time Project Coordinator:

Drs. Kenneth Rubin and Andrea Chronis-Tuscano are seeking a full-time project coordinator to join the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded project – “A Multi-Component Early Intervention for Socially Inhibited Preschool Children.” The primary aim of the project is to examine mediators and moderators of treatment response to a newly developed intervention (“The Turtle Project” https://sites.google.com/site/umdlittleturtles/umd-preschool-shyness-study). Outcome measures include parent and teacher ratings/questionnaires of child anxiety symptoms/disorders, temperament, and social functioning; observational measures of parenting and children's social behaviors in the classroom; and heart rate physiology (a biological index of emotional reactivity and regulation). The successful candidate will work with Drs. Rubin and Chronis-Tuscano, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students studying multiple aspects of treatment effectiveness. Primary responsibilities will include working with participants to schedule study assessments; assisting with data collection and management; and general lab management and administrative duties (assisting with IRB protocols, supervising undergraduate RAs).

Qualifications include a BA/BS in psychology, counseling, social work, education, or related areas, and excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Description

The EDAPT Clinic and Translational Cognitive and Affective (TCAN) Laboratory have complementary goals to clinically intervene as early as possible and study the neural mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction in psychotic illness. The TCAN lab is recruiting for two positions to serve as junior specialists at the UC Davis Medical Center for the Reducing Duration of Untreated Psychosis study. This study tests the effectiveness of using electronic screening and telemedicine approaches to rapidly identify and treat individuals who present with psychosis to a variety of community sites (e.g., schools, emergency rooms, behavioral health clinics).

DEGREE REQUIREMENT Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, psychobiology, neuroscience or a related field .

RESEARCH The incumbent will be trained to use knowledge of mental health conditions to conduct phone evaluations to determine study eligibility of potential participants. The incumbent will also consent study participants and schedule all of their research appointments. The incumbent will conduct clinical interviews for research purposes under the supervision of a faculty member and will conduct behavioral testing sessions. The incumbent will manage the study IRB protocols, adhering strictly to privacy and confidentiality laws. The incumbent will also manage data collection and organization, including mentoring undergraduate volunteers in the input of data to multiple databases.

The current study will be entering a new piloting phase starting Summer 2018, which will allow the incumbent to meaningfully contribute to Phase 2 study design and revisions. Depending on their contribution and role in the lab, the incumbent may have the opportunity assist in study design and analysis as well as writing and review of relevant manuscripts. The incumbent may have the opportunity to creatively contribute to the research project by proposing alternative analysis strategies, generate novel projects with existing data and review literature for manuscript preparation.

The incumbent will be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results with PI and others in the lab.

35% Clinical Interviewing

  • Use prior knowledge of mental health conditions (from college or graduate level education) and provided training in diagnostic assessments to complete phone evaluations with potential research participants and family members. Phone evaluations will examine mental health concerns and other psychosocial factors in order to determine if individual may be eligible for research.
  • Conduct in-person ratings of symptomatology for research purposes using structured interviews and under the supervision of faculty member.
  • Use knowledge of mental health conditions and available treatment options to provide referrals to consumers who are not eligible for research study.

20% Data Collection and Organization

  • Conduct behavioral assessments with research participants including computerized and paper-and-pencil tests of multiple aspects of cognitive functioning.
  • Maintain databases of all study data, including demographic, symptom, and cognitive data.
  • Oversee individuals at clinics and schools who are participating in our study to ensure adherence to study protocol (i.e., correct use of electronic tablets and referral information).
  • Maintain organized records for all participants in locked filing cabinets

10% IRB Protocol Maintenance

  • Maintain HIPAA and Consent documents for IRB, including adhering to required privacy laws
  • Maintain accurate enrollment counts

    Description

    Broadly, the Translational Cognitive and Affective (TCAN) Laboratory studies the neural mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction in psychotic illness. This position is to serve as a technically-oriented junior specialist for the Understanding Early Psychosis study at the UC Davis Medical Center.

    RESEARCH The incumbent will be responsible for many aspects of data collection and analysis, and consequently will benefit from having experience or interest in neuroimaging and programming as well as strong interpersonal skills. The incumbent will become proficient in operating all MRI and EEG hardware at the Imaging Research Center and will be responsible for collecting, organizing, and analyzing neuroimaging data (including diffusion MRI, fMRI, EEG/ERP, and PET). The incumbent will use programming expertise to generate and maintain computer code used in organizing and analyzing behavioral and neuroimaging data. Finally, the incumbent will manage data collection and organization of behavioral data, including mentoring undergraduate volunteers in the input of data to multiple databases.

    Additionally, the laboratory is starting several new pilot projects focused on using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and the incumbent would have the opportunity to provide valuable input to the design and implementation of these studies at this early stage, gain exposure to development of ideas for grant proposals, and collect ongoing data for the projects over the next two years.

    • Generate, modify, and maintain in-house software used to analyze neuroimaging data, including shell scripts, Matlab scripts, and other widely available neuroimaging software.
    • Analyze multiple forms of neuroimaging data, including diffusion MRI, spectroscopy, PET, and functional MRI.
    • Maintain detailed records of quality control procedures in data analysis pipeline.
