NSF-REU Site: Comparative and Developmental Origins of Social Cognition at Yale Dates: June 4- August 10, 2018   The Canine Cognition Center and Social Cognitive Development Lab are seeking applicants for a summer 2018 NSF-REU program. The REU program is supported by an award from the U.S. National Science Foundation (Award #1659085) to Yale University as part of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program.  The broad goal of the Comparative and Developmental Origins of Social Cognition REU Site is to provide students from under-represented backgrounds with joint training in developmental and comparative psychology research. Students will gain experience investigating the origins of human social cognition from two different but related perspectives: developmental studies testing human children’s social understanding and comparative studies examining social cognition in domesticated dogs. The REU is coordinated by Psychology professors Dr. Laurie Santos and Dr. Yarrow Dunham.   REU students will have a rare opportunity to participate in all aspects of the research process: research design, subject recruitment, stimulus generation, data collection, data entry, coding, and statistical analysis. In addition, students will have the opportunity to interact as colleagues: participating in weekly lab meetings, reading current literature, contributing to theoretical discussions regarding the comparative and developmental origins of social cognition, and attending a professional development series focusing on topics such as applying to graduate school, getting the most out of your undergraduate career, etc. Students will meet weekly with a graduate student mentor, and the PI and co-PI will attend bi-monthly social events. The REU Fellowship includes a $500/week stipend and can cover limited travel costs.   To be eligible for the Yale REU program, applicants must: ·  be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident ·  be a full-time student (and be returning to school in the fall) ·  have experience or be comfortable working around dogs ·  commit to the full 40 hr/ week 9-week internship, which will include at least some weekends Women and members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Summer Internship-Center for Educational Improvement

The Center for Educational Improvement is a non-profit organization in VA that conducts research and professional development to improve schools. We are seeking interns for the summer to assist with 6 areas: heart centered learning (mindfulness, compassion and social emotional development), executive functioning, trauma, poverty, reducing text anxiety, and improving school disciplinary policies. We are interested in the relationship between improving children’s executive functions and their well-being and improvement in academic achievement. We also focus on practical application in schools and consider the role of school administrators as well as teachers and ancillary staff. 

The internships can be virtual, or if you live in the DC area, we meet weekly. Most interns work 15-20 hours a week for at least 9-12 weeks.  Interns assist with conducting literature reviews, preparing presentations, analyzing data, writing proposals, and writing blog posts and eNewsletter articles. You are given a byline for articles you write, and we post bios on our website. Our monthly eNewsletter is distributed directly to over 6,000 principals and school leaders and through a relationship with the National Association of Elementary School Principals we reach another 22,000 educational leaders. About us:

The Language Learning Lab at Boston College (L3@BC) opened in January of 2016. Our research sits at the intersection between linguistics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and psychology. Our strategy is to leverage new and emerging technologies to address previously unanswerable scientific questions. Methodologically, the lab uses a number of well-established methods, such as judgment studies, eye-tracking, and ERPs. However, we are particularly interested in exploring and exploiting new and emerging methods. One such method is testing tens or even hundreds of thousands of children and adults over the Internet, and in doing so being able to study questions that were previously out of reach.

Summer Research Assistant

The Cooperation Lab at Boston College directed by Katherine McAuliffe is seeking motivated, reliable and enthusiastic summer research assistants who would like to gain experience with research in social cognitive development. Research in the lab focuses on the development of cooperative abilities in children, with a particular focus on how children develop a sense of fairness.

Internship Description 

Summer research responsibilities include participant recruitment, help running studies both in the lab and in outdoor spaces, debriefing parents, data entry and video coding. Additionally, research assistants will be involved in an informal reading and research group and will gain hands-on experience working with data. Research assistants will work closely with other team members and will be supervised by the Cooperation Lab’s director and lab manager.

In addition to gaining experience with all aspects of our research, the lab will be hosting a high school summer internship program and assistants will have the opportunity to mentor high school students in the latter part of their internship.

Eligibility and requirements 

Research assistants are asked to commit approximately 40 hours per week to research in the lab and should be open to the possibility of testing outdoors and on weekends. The internship will be 10-11 weeks starting around the beginning of June. These are unpaid positions so students are encouraged to seek funding from outside sources and/or their home institutions.

Summer Scholar Counselor at Children’s Mercy

Children’s Mercy (located in the Kansas City metro area) announces summer scholar Counselor (typically undergraduate students) and Lead (typically graduate students) Counselor positions for our Summer Treatment Program (STP). The STP is an award winning, evidence-based program for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) developed by William Pelham, Ph.D. and associates. The STP has been listed in SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. The Children’s Mercy STP is directed by Children’s Mercy ADHD Specialty Clinic Director of Psychological Services, Carla Counts Allan, Ph.D., and co-directed by Children’s Mercy Psychologists, Trista Perez Crawford, Ph.D. and Simone Sherman Moody, Ph.D. 

Counselors and Lead Counselors will receive approximately 360 hours of face-to-face clinical experience working with children with ADHD and related behavior problems. Counselors are assigned to groups of 10-15 children, with 4-5 counselors per group. Counselors implement behavior modification procedures for sports, social skills training, art, and academic activities. Counselors will provide feedback to children and parents and record behavioral data for children in their groups. They also receive daily performance feedback from experienced staff members who provide live supervision. There will be one Lead Counselor for each group. Lead Counselors will participate in counselor responsibilities in addition to overseeing the duties of the counselors in their group.

Activities take place outdoors and counselors will be involved in recreational activities throughout the day; this requires knowledge of rules/fundamentals of represented sports. Counselors will serve as Sport Leaders and will plan and implement skill drills to improve children’s performance. Previous experience in sports participation, refereeing, or coaching children is preferred.

Counselors must be available to work from May 25, 2017 through July 28, 2017. The beginning of employment will include a multi-day training session. Hired counselors will be responsible for reading the STP manual and being familiar with its contents prior to beginning employment.

Counselor hours of employment are from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Counselors also work until 8:30 PM one evening/week while parents participate in weekly parent training groups. Counselors and lead counselors are paid an hourly wage with overtime benefits commensurate with their experience and position requirements.

Undergraduate and graduate level students interested in Clinical Psychology or Pediatrics are encouraged to apply. Experience gained at the STP may also be beneficial in preparation for careers in education, mental health, physical education, psychiatry, recreational therapy, behavior analysis, social work, and counseling and can serve as an opportunity to obtain a recommendation for work or graduate school. Positions are competitive and offers will be made until positions are filled. Yale Infant Cognition Center Summer 2018 Internship

Research: Our research broadly focuses on social cognition in infancy. We are running a number of studies with infants & toddlers ranging from birth to 5 years old. These studies are largely focused on discovering what infants think about various aspects of the social world.  Some of the topics we look at include examining infants' preferences for characters based on their social behavior or group membership and infants' reasoning about the natural world. More information about our research can be found at http://campuspress.yale.edu/infantlab/.  Internship Opportunity: Interns will work closely with lab researchers on new and ongoing studies, participating fully in all aspects of the research process. Interns will become familiar with experimental methods used in infant studies, and will immediately become involved in recruiting and testing participants, designing and setting up studies, and coding and analyzing results. They will also attend a weekly lab meeting where we discuss the theoretical motivation for our studies, experimental data, and relevant research findings from other labs. Project Title: Technology-based tools for teaching early literacy skills

Project Introduction:  The overall project objective is to investigate cognitive mechanisms related to learning early literacy skills, and to apply findings expressly to educational interventions for struggling learners. The project includes a multimethod approach through two studies: The first uses a class of machine learning computational methods (neural networks) to examine models of learning sound-symbol correspondence for the deep orthography of English. The second applies findings from study 1 to the teaching of letter-sound correspondences using technology-based tools with primary-1 students in a learning support program (LSP).

Study description:  This position involves programming the computational models for study 1.  The investigation includes running simulations with the models to simulate learning across different conditions, with varying input and model characteristics. Findings will contribute to our understanding of best methods for teaching early literacy skills to diverse learners. The study is headed by Dr. Beth O’Brien (ECD lab, NIE) and Dr. Luca Onnis (LEAP lab, NTU).

Requirements

This is a full-time, paid position in the Department of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences at Brown University. 

The lab coordinator will be part of several projects in the lab, including laboratory-based measures of children's belief revision, scientific reasoning, and social learning, 3D motion tracking of children’s responses to examine mechanisms of cognitive control and social cognitive development, and onsite investigation of parent-child interaction and exploration at in museum settings. In addition to lab manager duties, opportunities exist for development of independent research and publication. The position is for two years, with a third year possible, contingent on funding.

The lab coordinator will work with the PI, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers to engage in data collection, coding, and data analysis. Other responsibilities will include supervising and training undergraduate research assistants, coordinating coding of large-scale data projects, maintaining IRB paperwork for research compliance, coordinating testing schedules and logistics, and maintaining laboratory website.

This position is funded by the NIH (for up to 2 years), and involves coordinating and executing the transcription and coding of a very large audio-visual dataset. The goal is for the audio-visual data, its metadata, and its partial transcription to be made freely available to other researchers via Databrary. My lab focuses on language and social development, and individuals who share these interests are especially encouraged to apply.

About the dataset: over the course of two years, we collected 3 hrs/wk of audio-visual data from head-mounted cameras worn by infants/children in their homes. We began recording at age 6-8 months, and ended recording around age 2.5 y; the dataset is longitudinal. We now have hundreds of hours of naturalistic in-home recordings from the infant's/child's perspective. We also collected cognitive, social, and linguistic data from the children on a monthly basis. This is an exceptionally rich dataset, and we are seeking applicants to help archive these data so that other researchers can access them.

About the position:

Laboratory Coordinator Position—Mount Holyoke College

The Relationships, Attachment, and Development Lab, directed by Dr. KC Haydon at the Mount Holyoke College Department of Psychology and Education, seeks a full-time lab coordinator.

The lab coordinator will assist with an NSF-funded study of links between self-regulation, conflict, and sleep disruption in adult couples. The lab uses behavioral observation, physiological, interview, survey, and experience sampling methods. Duties include assisting with participant recruitment, data collection, coding, and analysis. Administrative responsibilities include managing the data collection calendar, overseeing interview transcription, ordering supplies, assisting with annual reports and documentation, and coordinating undergraduate research assistant schedules. The lab coordinator may also attend conferences and contribute to preparation of scientific publications.

The position is ideally suited to a recent college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, family social science, or a related field who is seeking additional research experience before going on to graduate school. The position requires strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills; ability to work independently; emotional maturity and sound judgment; cultural competency; and interest in social contexts of stress and relationship science. Data collection will often occur on evenings and weekends; scheduling flexibility is a must. The lab coordinator should be comfortable facilitating conflict discussions with diverse adult community members, as well as working closely with undergraduate student research assistants. The position requires use of SPSS, R, and MPlus; expertise in at least one of these statistical packages and a willingness to learn others is a must.

The Massachusetts General Hospital Dauten Family Center for Bipolar Treatment Innovation (formerly the Bipolar Clinic and Research Program) is seeking applicants for a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) position. The aim of the program is to evaluate psychiatric and psychosocial treatments for bipolar disorder, to learn more about the causes and general course of this disorder, and to investigate the pathophysiology of the condition with neuroimaging and other biological markers. Our program participates in large-scale, multi-site, NIMH, industry, and privately-sponsored initiatives.

The CRC will manage and conduct a full range of research and clinical activities within the program. The CRC will assist in conducting clinical studies with the clinical and research staff. Responsibilities include structured patient interviews, patient recruitment, data collection and management, grant preparation, Institutional Review Board correspondence, phlebotomy (drawing blood), as well as other key administrative tasks. The CRC will also be offered the opportunity to assist with data analysis and preparation of poster presentations, symposiums, and manuscripts. The CRC will also answer triage phone calls, conduct phone screens, participate in case reviews to determine patient’s eligibility and make referrals. A key component of the position includes assisting in grant proposals for future clinical trials. The CRC will liaise with Research Management at Massachusetts General Hospital, the funding agency, as well as help prepare aspects of the proposal.

The primary research projects the CRC will work on may include, but are not limited to psychosocial interventions (e.g., mindfulness-based, cognitive behavioral, lifestyle changes), medication-based trials (e.g., new medications, dose-response, examination of side effects), online and mobile phone based studies, as well as a transcranial laser therapy study pilot testing a near infrared LED device. Currently, a major project within our program is developing the MoodNetwork (www.moodnetwork.org), a patient-centered online initiative aimed at building a community of 50,000 individuals with mood disorders to conduct comparative effectiveness studies. Thus, if you have an interest and/or special expertise in web interventions (e.g., website development, design, online assessment and recruitment, use of social media), please mention this in your cover letter. Please note that interest and expertise in managing web content and social media outlets is a plus, but not a requirement or necessary for this position.

A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts is required. A strong background in psychology, biology, and/or health sciences is preferred. Research Study Assistant, Labs of Cognitive Neuroscience, Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard School of Medicine

The Faja Lab within the Laboratories of Cognitive Neuroscience (LCN) at Boston Children’s Hospital is seeking a Research Assistant for a new NIMH-funded project examining the emergence of executive function difficulties in young children with ASD relative to children with developmental delays or no developmental concerns. Research in the LCN is generally dedicated to furthering our understanding of brain and cognitive development in children diagnosed with or at risk for various developmental disorders. Through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, we aim to drive the science forward as rapidly as possible, so that we can translate what we learn into earlier identification, improved therapies, and better outcomes for children and families affected by developmental disorders. Children’s Hospital of Boston is ranked as the top Children’s Hospital in the United States and is committed research and to building a diverse workforce. The Research Assistant will work primarily on a project that will examine biological and behavioral markers associated with executive and social functioning in preschool aged children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), developmental delays, and no developmental concerns. The project will use electrophysiology, behavioral, clinical, and parent report measures in a group of children who are participating at multiple time points. Responsibilities will include recruiting and scheduling participants, running experimental study sessions, administering EEG measures, behaviorally assisting children during visits, coordinating collection of surveys from parents, as well as data entry and management. This project is a longitudinal study that requires a high level of data integrity. The research assistant may also be responsible for coordinating and training research interns. Finally, the research assistant will contribute to data processing, scoring, and cleaning and will have the opportunity to assist with analysis.

The lab manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily research and administrative tasks of the lab. The lab manager’s primary task will be overseeing a multi-year NSF funded project on ethics in the workplace. We seek to appoint a Research Assistant (full-time) to work within the Centre for Research on Play in Education, Development and Learning (PEDaL) in the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. The position is funded by the LEGO Foundation to provide research support  for a project to develop and empirically evaluate play-based approaches to teaching science in early childhood classrooms.  

Primary activities include assistance in:

  • recruiting teachers and children to participate in the project;
  • assessing classroom practice in Reception and Year 1 in a variety of schools;
  • developing and administering tests of children's oblem-solving, help-seeking, executive function, and scientific reasoning.

The successful applicant will work as part of a team of researchers led by Dr Sara Baker and Dr Audrey Kittredge, and so will receive support and training. Selected researchers from other national and international institutions collaborate in research initiated by the Center.

The Center has five specific aims: to advance the frontiers of behavioral, biological, and social science by supporting interdisciplinary research on the bio-behavioral development of individuals over the life span and across generations; serve society by establishing linkages between the University of North Carolina, the state, and the nation through research related to promotion of healthy behaviors in individuals, families, schools, and communities; enhance teaching by providing an advanced interdisciplinary studies program in developmental science for doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and faculty members; promote and support faculty scholarship and research collaboration across disciplines, departments, schools, and universities in the study of developmental processes, and foster cross-institutional cooperation in developmental studies at component campuses of the University of North Carolina and private universities in North Carolina.

The CDS has a variety of research and training programs such as the Behavioral Science Research Division (BSRD), the Social Development and Intervention Research Program (SDIRP), the Developmental Methodology Core, the Health Risk Behaviors Core, and the Carolina Consortium on Human Development (CCHD). There are more than 16 funded research projects that are conducted by the Center faculty. Most of these projects have been funded by federal agencies, but there are also state funded contracts, private foundation grants, sub-contractual agreements, and internal awards.

This full-time research position is time-limited for a 3-year period and is assigned to projects that are affiliated with the Behavioral Science Research Division at the Center for Developmental Science.

This position is designed to serve as a Research Assistant (RA) for newly-funded projects of the Behavioral Research Science Division at the Center for Developmental Science. The RA will work with principal investigators and other research staff to provide support to assigned research activities with a focus on participant recruitment, data collection, and data processing. Primary areas of responsibilities are:

About 4KEEPS

This is a two-site (UCLA and UCSD) NIMH-funded project focused on community therapists implementation of multiple evidence-based practices for children’s mental health within a system-driven reform in Los Angeles County. The aims of the new study are to develop a pragmatic quality assessment tool to assess therapist delivery of EBP strategies associated with positive client outcomes.  This study is being conducted by Drs. Lauren Brookman-Frazee and Anna Lau.

About TEAMS

This is a set of two coordinated NIMH-funded studies that will test ways to support community providers in their learning and delivery of treatments for ASD.  TEAMS is being carried out in three-sites (UCLA, UC Davis and UCSD) under the direction of Drs. Lauren Brookman-Frazee, Aubyn Stahmer and Anna Lau.

The Mathematics, Reasoning and Learning Lab (mrlab.rutgers.edu) studies the cognitive neuroscience of mathematics learning, with applications to typical and atypical development, such as mathematical learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. A key feature of our research is combining functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with outside-the-scanner training paradigms.

Responsibilities will include data collection from child and adult research participants in a behavioral and functional brain imaging setting, contacting and scheduling research participants and their families, managing institutional review board (IRB) protocols, and data analysis.

We invite applications for an 18-month Research Associate position in child language acquisition, to work with Dr. Silke Brandt (Department of Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster University) and Professor Anna Theakston (Division of Human Communication, Development & Hearing, School of Health Sciences, University of Manchester).

The role involves conducting experimental studies of language acquisition and cognitive development with young children, and arranging outreach events for parents and practitioners in the wider community. The project is on children’s implicit and explicit understanding of false belief and their acquisition of epistemic markers. We are looking for a highly-motivated person with an undergraduate degree, and preferably also a postgraduate degree, in linguistics, psychology, cognitive science or a related subject; with experience in conducting experimental studies with young children and their caregivers; with excellent communication and organisational skills; and with experience in ethical issues in psychological research with children. Experience with eye-tracking would be a plus.

The Behavioral Ethics Lab (BeLab), led by Dr. Cristina Bicchieri, is seeking to hire a highly skilled and motivated individual to work as a full-time research assistant beginning in the summer of 2017. Dr. Bicchieri is an expert in social norms and conducts research at the intersection of philosophy, economics, and psychology. Our group includes behavioral economists, psychologists, network analysts, game theorists, applied mathematicians, and philosophers. This is an excellent position for those who are seeking to be exposed to a vibrant research environment, for example in preparation of a graduate degree or a research career in the private sector. The research specialist would help out with many elements of our lab's research activity. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) programming lab and online economics experiments and surveys, collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data, as well as writing up results.

The lab studies the development of executive functioning, investigating how children learn to achieve goals by planning ahead, stopping themselves from doing things they shouldn’t do, flexibly switching from one activity to another, and solving problems. The lab also explores social and contextual factors that shape the development of executive function, and implications for intervention.

Responsibilities include:

* Managing an active lab of 15-20 undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral researchers

* Assisting and training new lab members on interacting with families, running experiments, coding videotapes, etc.

* Recruiting families and new personnel* Maintaining and upgrading experimental, computer, and a/v equipment

* Overseeing purchases and participant funds* Managing lab database and website
