Yale Infant Cognition Center Summer 2018 Internship

Research: Our research broadly focuses on social cognition in infancy. We are running a number of studies with infants & toddlers ranging from birth to 5 years old. These studies are largely focused on discovering what infants think about various aspects of the social world.  Some of the topics we look at include examining infants' preferences for characters based on their social behavior or group membership and infants' reasoning about the natural world. More information about our research can be found at http://campuspress.yale.edu/infantlab/.  Internship Opportunity: Interns will work closely with lab researchers on new and ongoing studies, participating fully in all aspects of the research process. Interns will become familiar with experimental methods used in infant studies, and will immediately become involved in recruiting and testing participants, designing and setting up studies, and coding and analyzing results. They will also attend a weekly lab meeting where we discuss the theoretical motivation for our studies, experimental data, and relevant research findings from other labs. In addition, interns will have the chance to learn about and interact with other developmental psychology labs at Yale and attend sessions organized by professors and graduate students on topics such as applying to graduate school. Interns are encouraged to join graduate students and other researchers from across the department in fun activities such as barbecues, bowling, trivia karaoke nights, etc. Internship Requirements: The internship will involve a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. Undergraduate students at all stages are welcome to apply. The internship is best suited to students interested in pursuing graduate studies in developmental, social, or cognitive psychology. This is a volunteer position, but it is encouraged to apply for outside funding from one's own university, and we are happy to support these applications.

UMD ADHD program seeking an RA with fMRI experience

The Maryland ADHD Program in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park directed by Dr. Andrea Chronis-Tuscano is seeking a full-time research assistant beginning Summer 2017 (specific start date flexible).  In collaboration with researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Center for Neurodevelopment and Imaging Research (CNIR) at Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Maryland ADHD Program has been recommended for funding to investigate reward responsiveness as a putative mechanism of change in an ongoing randomized clinical trial of behavioral activation treatment in college students with ADHD who are engaging in problematic alcohol use.  This exciting project will combine bio-behavioral (i.e., computerized behavioral tasks; multimodal neuroimaging) and treatment outcome research to better understand mechanisms underlying successful treatment for college students with ADHD engaged in problematic alcohol use. This position is contingent upon official funding from the agency.

Research assistant responsibilities include recruiting and scheduling participants for research studies, data collection (MRI and computerized tasks), data processing and analysis (using neuroimaging software such as FSL, SPM, AFNI and matlab), assistance with IRB paperwork and general management of study operations. Key skills for this position include the ability to organize and manage time and multiple tasks, the ability to work independently, experience and proficiency with administering behavioral tasks (e.g., E-prime, Presentation) and neuroimaging software (i.e., SPM, AFNI, etc), and the ability to maintain effective communications and working relationships with other study team members, supervisors and participants. Research assistants will also assist with presentations for scientific conferences and manuscript/grant preparation.

Necessary qualifications include: 1) a BA/BS in Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or related field; 2) research experience collecting, processing or analyzing fMRI data; 3) proficiency with MATLAB; and 4) excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. This position is for one year.

The Child Cognition Lab (PI: Deb Kelemen) currently has an opening for a Research Assistant to begin Fall 2017.

The Child Cognition Lab conducts research projects with children and adults. We are currently engaged in a large-scale, federally funded research project examining young children’s understanding and learning of complex biological concepts. We are seeking a highly motivated and research oriented Research Assistant to work on this project. The ideal candidate would be interested in how children learn, science education, and applied psychological research. The roles of the position include recruiting participants, processing data, and helping run participants both in lab and outside of lab settings. This paid position is for 20-30 hours a week from September to August, with the possibility of increased hours.

With four official languages, the linguistic environment of Singapore is globally unique, with rich, inter-generational bilingualism in diverse languages, with diverse writing systems. This landscape provides unique advantages for Singapore’s progress in an increasingly globalised world. It also presents unique challenges in education, as teaching practices established in monolingual communities (like the US, the UK and Australia) may be poorly suited to the needs of Singapore’s bilingual learners. This research will evaluate how different patterns of exposure influence bilingual and biliterate language development in three research streams. We will record language spoken around infants and toddlers in the home, and evaluate patterns of language used in the homes of Singaporean caregivers from birth to 2 years; We will investigate how different language mixes contribute to the sensitivity, flexibility, and speed of toddlers’ aural-language skills; and we will investigate the link between early language skills and learning to read, in a group of children evaluated for their early aural and pre-reading skills pre-kindergarten, and their reading and brain network connectivity after school entry. The Gaab Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital is looking for a Research Assistant for a number of new projects examining language and reading development from infancy to adolescence. This includes subject recruitment for pediatric research studies (for English and Spanish speaking families) which will include close interaction with pediatricians in the Boston area, scheduling of pediatric research subjects, database maintenance, implementation and maintenance of analysis software; pediatric testing (including MRI/fMRI scanning of young children and infants) and data analyses (psychometrics, psychophysics and structural/functional magnetic imaging), stimuli design and administrative work (e.g., preparation of internal review board proposals). We are in particular looking for someone who is bilingual (English-Spanish) and who has experience with the administration of standardized tests (in English and Spanish).

The position is ideal for anyone considering future graduate study in cognitive (developmental) neuroscience, developmental psychology, education, computer science, cognitive science or neuroscience. We are seeking a graduate researcher to join a new project investigating cognitive and educational foundations of preschool mathematics skills. The position will involve employing standardised assessments and experimental measures with young children, their parents and preschool providers in Oxfordshire.

The post is funded by the Nuffield Foundation until 31 January 2019, and it involves an exciting collaboration between the Department of Experimental Psychology, the Department of Education and expert advisors in Early Years Education.

The postholder will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the research project and contribute to wider project planning, and knowledge exchange activities involving local teachers and childcare providers. As this post involves travel to local preschools to collect data this would be facilitated by having access to own reliable transport.

You will hold a good undergraduate degree and have a keen interest in developmental psychology and early education. As well as experience of data analysis and the use of basic statistical packages, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage your own research and administrative activities.

Gregory Aarons, Ph.D. of the UC San Diego Psychiatry Department is currently seeking a Research and Evaluation Associate to assist with research and evaluation studies examining novel service delivery strategies in behavioral health, criminal justice, and social service settings.

The implementation of evidence-based practice into real-world human service settings is an important priority for improving the quality of services and outcomes for individuals and families. Identifying the factors that facilitate successful service implementation and the attainment of desired outcomes requires investigation into the characteristics of and inter-relationships between service delivery strategies, service recipients, service providers, and the organizations and systems within which they are embedded. Multiple ongoing research and evaluation studies utilize quantitative and quantitative methods to develop detailed service assessments and improvement recommendations for behavioral health and criminal justice service settings within San Diego County and throughout the State of California. Data sources include large administrative data sets as well as original data collected from service recipients, service providers, and administrators.  

Under supervision, the incumbent will function as a Research and Evaluation Associate in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry who will provide support for all phases of the research and evaluation process for one or more studies involving behavioral health, physical health, and/or related social service and criminal justice organizations and systems. Under supervision, the incumbent will be an active member of the research team and assist in literature reviews, study design, measurement, data collection, data management, data analysis, and manuscript/report/presentation preparation as needed. The incumbent will also support study administration tasks such as preparing IRB documentation, coordinating and participating in meetings and assisting with other study responsibilities as needed.

The ideal candidate will have completed college level coursework in psychology, psychiatry, sociology, or a related field and/or have equivalent experience, possess knowledge of public sector mental health and social service organizations, and have demonstrated experience designing and conducting evaluation or research studies and prior utilization of SPSS, STATA, SAS and/or other software packages for data management and analysis. Candidates who also have any qualitative research experience are especially encouraged to apply. Dr. Natalie H. Brito is seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) Lab Manager/Research Assistant to work on studies examining the development of language and memory during infancy and early childhood. The expected start data is August or September 2017. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual who would like to gain research experience in preparation for a graduate career.

Responsibilities include: (1) conducting experiments with young children (including: recruiting, scheduling, and data collection); (2) processing and analyzing data; (3) training and supervising undergraduate research assistants; (4) performing general administrative duties, including data management, lab web pages and participant recruiting systems; (5) programming scientific experiments and developing experimental stimuli, (6) assisting with IRB protocol creation and compliance, (7) conducting literature searches and reviews to assist in manuscript preparation; and (8) providing general support for the PI including, but not limited to, purchasing and maintaining lab equipment.

Summer Research Mentoring Program in Developmental Science      

This summer, Dr. Elizabeth Simpson and her team will be leading a Summer Research Mentoring Program, funded by the National Science Foundation. Students will be compensated $1,800 to work 20 hours per week over the course of this of this 9-week program.

The Social Cognition Lab studies the development of social behavior in infants, including neonatal imitation and face perception.   • High school seniors and undergraduate students are eligible. No prior research experience is required.

  • Participating in a research conference to learn more broadly about developmental science and to network with other leading scientists. The South Florida Child Psychology Collaborative Research Conference is a student-focused conference held in Miami every summer.
  • Designing a summer collaborative outreach project. Students will be encouraged to be creative and develop a project to educate children or families in the community on a topic related to our research.
  • Pairing up with a graduate student to produce a tangible product summarizing research findings. At the end of the program, students will share their results through a paper or presentation.

The Developmental Investigations of Behavior and Strategy (DIBS) Lab, directed by Dr. Alex Shaw at the University of Chicago is seeking a full-time research assistant to begin July 1st, 2017. 

The job will include working on research related to the development of social cognition, being involved in all aspects of the research. The particular focus of this position will entail coordinating projects investigating social influences on children’s allocation decisions and their moral judgments about others.  Responsibilities include overseeing research activities, including but not limited to: participant recruitment both in the lab, at schools, and at museums, undergraduate research assistant supervision, stimuli creation, helping design studies, testing child participants, as well as coding and analyzing data.

The ideal candidate should be detail-oriented, have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently, and be motivated, creative, and organized. The candidate must be willing to commit two years to the position. This position is particularly appropriate for individuals who are interested in pursuing graduate studies in psychology.

Gopnik Cognitive Development Lab Summer Internship, UC Berkeley

The Gopnik Cognitive Development Lab at UC Berkeley is now accepting applications for their summer research assistant internship. Interns will gain experience working on multiple projects at all stages of the research process.

This is an unpaid internship from approximately June 5 - August 4. Interns will be expected to work 20-30 hours/week.

Research interns will work with graduate students and the lab manager on multiple ongoing research projects. Interns will be responsible for coding data, recruiting and testing child and/or adult participants, and reading and discussing relevant theoretical and empirical papers. There will be weekly reading groups and lab meetings. Research interns should be comfortable working independently and managing their time effectively.

Prior experience working with children or working in a research lab is beneficial but not required.
