There is an open research assistant position at UCLA. This position is to serve as a lab manager, providing research and administrative support for neuroimaging and behavioral studies conducted both with individuals with major mental illness (primarily schizophrenia) and with healthy populations, including adolescents and young adults.

This position will be under the direction of Dr. Katherine Karlsgodt (UCLA Department of Psychology). Responsibilities include support in coordinating day to day research activities (e.g., recruitment and scheduling of participants, running research sessions), assistance in administrative activities (e.g., IRB protocol management, manuscript preparation), database management (e.g., data entry and organization), basic data processing (e.g., compilation of behavioral data for analysis, quality assurance and processing of neuroimaging data), and assistance in training and supervision of student volunteers. Lab Manager Georgetown Laboratory for Relational Cognition

The Georgetown Laboratory for Relational Cognition, directed by Dr. Adam Green, anticipates hiring a full-time lab manager to coordinate and conduct research on learning, reasoning, and creativity in high school students and young adults. The lab manager will contribute to ongoing large-scale grant-funded projects and help in development of new projects. The preferred start date is mid-June 2018. Primary Responsibilities:

- Collection of brain-imaging data (primarily fMRI), as well as behavioral and survey data

PT Research Support Assistant - Thirty Million Words (University of Chicago)

The Thirty Million Words Initiative at the University of Chicago is looking for a Research Support Assistant to transcribe videotaped parent-child play sessions recorded in our longitudinal randomized controlled trial (RCT).  The transcripts prepared from these sessions serve as the basis for multiple analyses through which we will evaluate the effectiveness of our Thirty Million Words-Home Visiting curriculum.  The position involves meticulous attention to detail, fluid use of multiple computer programs, and ability to maintain high accuracy of transcription of aural files over extended periods of time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare saved video files for transcription using Datavyu software for CLAN software analysis.
  • Prepare verbatim transcriptions of conversations between parents and young children using CHAT procedure.
  • Maintain high reliability with transcription team.
  • Save videos and transcripts according to TMW lab data organization methods.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Stanford Graduate School of Business Behavioral Lab is looking to hire two (2) full-time Research Assistants for a commitment through 7/31/18, with the possibility of a 2nd year renewal. This is a perfect position for those looking towards graduate school in organizational behavior, marketing, social psychology, and related fields.     The research assistant (RA) provides direct research support to the organizational behavior and behavioral marketing faculty and PhD students at the GSB Behavioral Lab.  Research support, about 80+% of time, may consist of running experiment sessions, programming computer-based studies, data coding and entry, and gathering field data. 

The research assistant must be and independent self-starter who can take initiative, see projects through to completion, and understand the unique priorities and demands of lab-based experimentation. Excellent communication and computer skills (word, excel, helpful to know html, etc.) are essential; statistics ability desirable. An ability to balance multiple, competing projects working with multiple faculty and doctoral students is a must. A mature personality is also a must.

The RA is responsible for maintaining a consistent and constant presence in the lab.  The RA may also have opportunities to sit in on lab meetings, and seminars. Supervision may be minimal or intensive, depending on the project; the successful candidate should be able to work well with both styles.

Georgetown’s Department of Psychology  is home to a diverse and collaborative community of scholars who conduct research in psychology, neuroscience, and public policy, and who teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Research by Faculty in the Department of Psychology - from basic science investigations of behavior and brain function to applications for public policy - is directed at Georgetown University’s goal of creating and communicating knowledge in the service of the common good. Our Undergraduate Program offers a Major and a Minor in Psychology and provides a variety of opportunities for scholarship and extracurricular enrichment. The Research Assistant provides administrative and research support to Georgetown’s Early Learning Project.  S/he assists with laboratory as well as with recruiting and testing of study participants. S/he will be trained to run memory flexibility, memory interference and cognitive flexibility studies and collect data in the field and code data in the laboratory. Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI) and working with a PhD student, the Research Assistant has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Participates in field visits to the participants’ homes to collect data.
  • Performs coding and collation of data – and trains team members on coding practice
  • Performs administrative duties – for example, preparation of materials for families, and maintenance of records.

Research Coordinator for the Autism and Neurobehavioral Development Research Program at the University of Kansas

This position provides the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working with clinical populations, developing skills in psychological and neuropsychological testing, and participating in each phase of the research process within large-scale, NIH funded research studies. The majority of previous RAs in these positions have successfully gone on to pursue training in medical school, clinical psychology programs, and cognitive neuroscience programs.

This position presents diverse opportunities to participate in cutting-edge developmental psychology research, and is part of the NSF-funded project, “Spatial foundations of symbolic numeracy skills in young children.” This project will investigate the specific mechanisms through which children’s spatial skills impact their numerical development, using both longitudinal and experimental methods with children in pre-k to 4th grades.

    LRDC Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program

    The Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking summer undergraduate interns to promote broader participation in training in the Learning Sciences. We aim to bring students to LRDC who embody the diversity of our nation, region, and city. LRDC interns would gain experience in the Learning Sciences (research on instruction and learning) by working on a project with a faculty member who specializes in this area. Interns may also work with advanced graduate students or postdoctoral fellows in the faculty members' labs.

    Faculty have primary appointments in the Department of Psychology, and the Schools of Education, Law, and Computing and Information. Although applications from all undergraduate students will be considered, these internships are most appropriate for students who will be entering the final year of undergraduate study.     2017 University of Washington Early Childhood Cognition Lab Summer Internship

    The Early Childhood Cognition Lab at the University of Washington is offering summer internships to bright, energetic students who are eager to learn more about development psychology. Directed by Professor Jessica Sommerville, the lab conducts research on the development of children's sociomoral concerns (e.g., when and how do infants and children understand distributive fairness?), and their sociomoral behavior (e.g., what motivates infants' and children's prosocial behavior?). To investigate these topics, we use a combination of techniques that include behavioral approaches (e.g., infants' attention to social events, infants' active choices of social partners, infants' use of touch screens to evaluate events, etc.), and psychophysical approaches (e.g., EEG, ERP, pupil dilation, etc.).

    Summer interns will receive hands-on experience in every step of the research process. Each intern will also be paired with a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow and will work together on a project. Interns will participate in professional development seminars throughout the summer. At the end of the internship, each intern will create and present a poster at a research symposium. The internship is unpaid; applicants are encouraged to apply for funding from their home institutions or other external sources. The program will take place over 10 weeks during the summer of 2017 (early June - mid August). Interns will work 35-40 hours per week.  Duties may include: - Recruiting and scheduling lab participants - Assisting with stimuli design and creation - Conducting studies with infants and children in the lab - Coding and analyzing data - Discussing relevant journal articles in lab meetings

    UC Berkeley Language and Cognitive Development Lab 2017 Summer Internship

    The Language and Cognitive Development Lab at UC Berkeley, under the direction of Prof. Mahesh Srinivasan, is now accepting applications for their summer internship. The goal of this program is to provide a comprehensive, hands-on research experience to highly motivated students interested in language and the cognitive sciences.

    Our lab explores how linguistic, cognitive, and social development interact in early childhood. Interns will work closely with the professor, lab coordinator, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and each other. Interns will be involved in many facets of the research process, including reading relevant theoretical and empirical papers, designing experiments, creating stimuli, recruiting participants, conducting studies, and synthesizing and analyzing data. Interns will have the opportunity to test participants at preschools and/or children's museums in the Bay Area. Lastly, interns will attend weekly lab meetings and reading groups to discuss the theory behind research studies, and will have the opportunity to present on the projects they are assigned at the beginning and end of the internship.     Summer Research Assistant Opportunity, Infant Studies Lab at the University of Notre Dame

    The Infant Studies Lab at the University of Notre Dame, under the direction of Dr. Jill Lany, is accepting applications from highly motivated undergraduates and graduating seniors for our Summer Intern Program. The goal of this unpaid internship is to provide hands on research experience to students interested in pursuing graduate work in Cognitive and Language Development or a related field. Our lab employs behavioral methods such as Looking-While-Listening and the Head-Turn Preference procedure to investigate how infants learn languages and how they pick up patterns from the environment.     Applicants should have a background in psychology or related fields. Past research experience and basic computer skills are preferred but not required. Daily tasks might include recruiting participants over the phone, coding recorded videos and audio, and aiding in collecting and processing data.     Past interns have gone on to graduate school in cognitive development, neuroscience, clinical psychology, and speech language pathology as well as medical school.

    Summer Research Experience for Underrepresented Minority Students @ CMU

    Program in Interdisciplinary Education Research (PIER) at CMU is pleased to announce its 2017 Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).

    PIER-REU is designed to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities in graduate training programs by providing undergraduate students (mainly juniors and seniors) with research experience during summer. This program allows talented undergraduates to spend 8 weeks during the summer in a research laboratory at CMU.  Each student will receive a fellowship stipend of $3,000 and apartment-style housing will be provided. Guidance and supervision of the research project will be provided by a faculty member as well as, in some cases, a postdoctoral fellow and/or advanced graduate student.  Admitted students will also participate in the Go Research! Summer Program at CMU. This program brings undergraduate researchers from across departments together in apartment-style dorms with resident assistants to facilitate community building, manage housing, and provide programming.   A Summer Seminar Series is provided for all students to help prepare for graduate education and research careers.

    Fellowship Opportunity, Seattle Children’s Innovative Technologies Lab

    Seattle Children’s Innovative Technologies Lab at Seattle Children’s Research Institute/Autism Center is interested in recruiting highly qualified students from Duke University for a 2-year pre-doctoral fellowship for current graduates or graduating seniors. The position will commence the summer of 2017.

    Successful applicants will be involved in a training program with opportunities to use eye-tracking and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to examine gaze and brain activity patterns. They will also be involved in developing innovative technologies, such as mobile apps, video games, robots, smart toys and virtual reality. Fellows will be responsible for assisting in a variety of research activities in the lab that include, but not limited to, completing experimental protocols with young children and their families, organizing projects from the point of designing through data analysis and publication of results.     The Center for Social and Cultural Psychology (CSCP) at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium is accepting applications from undergraduates interested in social psychological research for our summer internship program. We have two sessions available. The first session starts May 29th 2017 and ends on July 7th 2017; the second session starts July 31st 2017 and ends on September 8th 2017. A selection process will select the most promising candidates from the applicants for the sessions.

    The University of Leuven is a strong research university in the heart of Europe, two hours from Paris, four hours from London. It is located in the center of the historic town of Leuven, home to the university since 1425. The center includes approx. 17 post docs and Ph.D. students. Full professors in the center are Vera Hoorens, Colette van Laar, Batja Mesquita, Agnes Moors, and Karen Phalet. The research themes in the center include socio-cultural processes of social identity, social inequality and intergroup relations, emotion, motivation and regulatory processes, ethnicity and gender, and diversity in school and work organizations. The Center has an excellent international reputation and extensive international research collaborations with social and cultural psychology groups.     The CSCP summer internship is open to students who are interested in gaining familiarity with and executing social psychological research. Interns will spend approximately 30 hours per week working in close contact with CSCP researchers. Work includes conducting studies with CSCP researchers in the lab and field, literature review, and (basic) data analysis.

    Interns will be provided with access to university facilities, but will be responsible for all other costs (e.g., transportation, travel, and meals). Note that for students from Europe there are also opportunities to come as part of Erasmus+ Traineeships (for internship of minimally 2 months (see http://ec.europa.eu/education/opportunities/higher-education/traineeships_en.htm). Students can also come via any other existing exchange program from their home university (please check with coordinator at your home university).

All applicants must commit to attending an entire session of the program (starting May 29th 2017 and departing on July 7th 2017; or starting July 31st 2017 and departing on September 8th 2017).     Applications should include:

    1. A one-page cover letter describing your research experience and interests. Please explain why you would like to attend the program, as well as whether you intend to pursue a PhD in a related field. This letter should also describe all previous research experience (including work in a lab or field, using existing data, and any work for your thesis). This letter should end with a declaration that you can attend at least one of the sessions of the program in its entirety, and for which session you are available (you can indicate both if available for both, and can indicate a preference if you like).

    2. A resume or curriculum vitae. Please include your university, major field of study, relevant courses in social psychology, intergroup relations, research methods and statistics (and grades if completed), relevant research experience, experience with data analysis, literature review, research programs (e.g. inquisit, medialab, authorware, limesurvey, qualtrics), statistical software (SPSS, EQS, Mplus, R etc), your average grade (GPA), expected graduation date, email address, languages you speak (of special interest are English, Dutch, Turkish, Japanese, French) and a working telephone number.

    Berkeley Early Learning Lab Summer Internship Program

    The Berkeley Early Learning Lab (BELL), under the direction of Dr. Fei Xu, is now accepting applications from highly motivated undergraduates and graduating seniors for our Summer Internship Program in 2017. 

    Descriptions of the Program  The goal of this internship is to provide hands on research experience to students interested in pursuing graduate work in Cognitive and Language Development or a related field. Successful applicants will be paired with a graduate student or postdoc mentor and will have the opportunity to conduct research at local children’s museums and in the lab, and collaborate on a variety of on-going and new projects. Our lab uses looking time, eye tracking, free play, intervention, and other behavioral methods to investigate inductive learning and statistical inference in social cognition, category learning, physical reasoning, causal learning, word learning, and other domains.

    In addition to collaboration with individual graduate students and work on specific projects, weekly lab meetings will give interns a chance to present their own work for feedback and provide feedback to others. We will also discuss current papers being published that relate to the lab's projects.

    Eligibilities Berkeley affiliated and Non-Berkeley undergraduates who are interested in developmental psychology and cognitive science are welcome to apply to our summer internship program. Applicants should have some course work in developmental psychology, cognitive science, and programming. Experience working with children is highly desirable. 

    Commitments This is an unpaid internship and requires a commitment of 20-30 hours/week for 8 weeks between June 5 and August 4.
