Research Assistant

Purpose and Main Duties

In collaboration with University College London, Kings College London and the MRC Unit The Gambia, we have been funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to conduct The Brain Imaging for Global Health (BRIGHT, http://globalfnirs.org) project. This prospective longitudinal study that aims to examine the link between early life risk factors, such as undernutrition and poverty, on infant neural and cognitive development. This is a multi-site project with researchers based in London (Birkbeck and UCL), Cambridge and the MRC unit in Keneba (in the Gambia). Infants in the Gambia and UK are tested on a range of measures including fNIRS, EEG, eye-tracking, and behavioural assessments from birth to the age of 24 months with the aim of developing “brain function for age reference curves” of development, exploring individual differences in infancy and investigating how these relate to early life risk factors.

Candidate Requirements

The research assistant will be responsible for the implementation and day to day management of new language measures in the Gambia and UK. This will include visiting participants’ homes to fit them with the recording devices, conducting interviews with caregivers, and general data management. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the general testing, quality control checks and analysis procedures that are conducted within the BRIGHT study.

The main site for the UK study is Cambridge, and so the post-holder will primarily be based at the University of Cambridge where Dr Sarah Lloyd-Fox is an Affiliated Lecturer. The post-holder will also be expected to regularly travel to the Gambia to oversee training and data collection at our second site.

Objective: The data technician is involved with the acquisition and maintenance of large amounts of clinical data and specimens. The work engages multiple skills and a wide-range of project knowledge. These multiple functions require a significant degree of flexibility to complete complex tasks.

Research Project Coordinator at Northwestern University (Start: September 1, 2017)

Job Summary:

This full-time (37.5 hours per week over 12 months) position involves assistance with planning and implementing a research study on “Promoting Emotion Regulation to Enhance Cognitive Functioning in Older Adults” (funded by the Retirement Research Foundation) at the Life-Span Development Laboratory (Director: Dr. Claudia Haase) in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. The laboratory/research project manager will organize the Institutional Review Board submission; organize participant recruitment, screening, and scheduling of study sessions; organize measurement development; organize software programming for laboratory-based data collection (e-Prime, Biolab, Qualtrics); assist with data collection including collection of emotion regulation (i.e., physiological, self-report) and cognitive functioning data; supervise and train graduate and undergraduate research assistants to assist with data collection and physiological data processing; supervise cleaning, synthesizing, and merging of emotion, cognition, and questionnaire data; and supervise data management for the project. Effective communication with study participants and research team members and detail-oriented organization under minimal supervision are required.

This is a one-year term appointment. Lab Manager/Research Assistant position at NYU, Lab for the Developing Mind

The Lab for the Developing Mind (PI: Moira Dillon) in the Department of Psychology at NYU is seeking a full-time Lab Manager/Research Assistant to begin in the summer of 2017. Areas of investigation in the lab include mathematical cognition, spatial cognition, symbolic and abstract thought and reasoning, and pictorial and mental imagery.

Responsibilities for the position include experimental design and stimuli development, running behavioral experiments with infants, children, and adults (in the lab, in museums, and/or online), participant recruitment, management and analysis of data, and lab administration (e.g., managing IRB protocols and training other lab members).

    Research Assistant at Tulane University

    The Child and Family Lab at Tulane University (PI: Dr. Sarah Gray) is seeking to hire a full-time clinical protocol / lab technician starting June 15 2017 through January 15 2019 (http://cfl.tulane.edu/), funded by NARSAD / Brain & Behavior Research Foundation.  Research in the lab focuses on developmental and physiological consequences of exposure to early life stress in young children and related risk and protective factors.  Current lab projects include opportunities for both child and adult assessment, experience with trauma-exposed populations, and psychophysiological data acquisition and analysis (heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, pre-ejection period and skin conductance collected from mothers and children).  The employee will work closely with the Principal Investigator, graduate students and undergraduates on all aspects of the research project. 

    Primary responsibilities will be to help with recruitment of families, scheduling, preparing and running research visits with mothers and young children; analyzing data; operating computer systems, maintaining databases; coordinating undergraduate research assistants; maintaining paperwork; maintaining research visit and IRB protocols; and contributing to research reports, proposals and presentations. The lab coordinator will also be responsible for training all incoming students on data collection, data entry, and various lab tasks. There are also opportunities to facilitate relationships with local community partners for research and support services.

    Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent; experience in lab-based research; exceptional flexibility, organizational, interpersonal, communication, and time management skills; and general computing skills including Microsoft Office. Preferred qualifications include a degree in psychology in a related field, experience working with human participants, statistical software experience (SPSS) as well as intellectual interest in our research focus.     Position Activities

    Research Assistant Position, Rhode Island Consortium for Autism Research & Treatment, Brown University

    The Rhode Island Consortium for Autism Research & Treatment (RI-CART) is looking for a highly organized and energetic person to serve as a research assistant. The RA will assist in the acquisition and analysis of participant information for clinical research projects. Duties will include interviewing participants and/or families to gather information and obtain informed consent, and other day-to-day study activities. There will be opportunities to participate in qualitative/quantitative analysis of data and possibly assist in preparation of manuscripts. An important part of the position will be to assist in recruiting efforts (e.g., contact providers, attending local events, and coordinating recruitment from affiliated clinical programs). RI-CART is an exciting and unique state-wide research consortium and patient registry effort. Since its inception in 2013, RI-CART has enrolled 1,400 individuals into the patient registry, and has developed strong partnerships with community providers and stakeholders.     LRDC Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program

    The Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking summer undergraduate interns to promote broader participation in training in the Learning Sciences. We aim to bring students to LRDC who embody the diversity of our nation, region, and city. LRDC interns would gain experience in the Learning Sciences (research on instruction and learning) by working on a project with a faculty member who specializes in this area. Interns may also work with advanced graduate students or postdoctoral fellows in the faculty members' labs.

    Faculty have primary appointments in the Department of Psychology, and the Schools of Education, Law, and Computing and Information. Although applications from all undergraduate students will be considered, these internships are most appropriate for students who will be entering the final year of undergraduate study.     2017 University of Washington Early Childhood Cognition Lab Summer Internship

    The Early Childhood Cognition Lab at the University of Washington is offering summer internships to bright, energetic students who are eager to learn more about development psychology. Directed by Professor Jessica Sommerville, the lab conducts research on the development of children's sociomoral concerns (e.g., when and how do infants and children understand distributive fairness?), and their sociomoral behavior (e.g., what motivates infants' and children's prosocial behavior?). To investigate these topics, we use a combination of techniques that include behavioral approaches (e.g., infants' attention to social events, infants' active choices of social partners, infants' use of touch screens to evaluate events, etc.), and psychophysical approaches (e.g., EEG, ERP, pupil dilation, etc.).

    Summer interns will receive hands-on experience in every step of the research process. Each intern will also be paired with a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow and will work together on a project. Interns will participate in professional development seminars throughout the summer. At the end of the internship, each intern will create and present a poster at a research symposium. The internship is unpaid; applicants are encouraged to apply for funding from their home institutions or other external sources. The program will take place over 10 weeks during the summer of 2017 (early June - mid August). Interns will work 35-40 hours per week.  Duties may include: - Recruiting and scheduling lab participants - Assisting with stimuli design and creation - Conducting studies with infants and children in the lab - Coding and analyzing data - Discussing relevant journal articles in lab meetings

    UC Berkeley Language and Cognitive Development Lab 2017 Summer Internship

    The Language and Cognitive Development Lab at UC Berkeley, under the direction of Prof. Mahesh Srinivasan, is now accepting applications for their summer internship. The goal of this program is to provide a comprehensive, hands-on research experience to highly motivated students interested in language and the cognitive sciences.

    Our lab explores how linguistic, cognitive, and social development interact in early childhood. Interns will work closely with the professor, lab coordinator, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and each other. Interns will be involved in many facets of the research process, including reading relevant theoretical and empirical papers, designing experiments, creating stimuli, recruiting participants, conducting studies, and synthesizing and analyzing data. Interns will have the opportunity to test participants at preschools and/or children's museums in the Bay Area. Lastly, interns will attend weekly lab meetings and reading groups to discuss the theory behind research studies, and will have the opportunity to present on the projects they are assigned at the beginning and end of the internship. We hope that interns will come away from these activities with an enriched understanding of language and cognitive development.

    Summer Research Assistant Opportunity, Infant Studies Lab at the University of Notre Dame

    The Infant Studies Lab at the University of Notre Dame, under the direction of Dr. Jill Lany, is accepting applications from highly motivated undergraduates and graduating seniors for our Summer Intern Program. The goal of this unpaid internship is to provide hands on research experience to students interested in pursuing graduate work in Cognitive and Language Development or a related field. Our lab employs behavioral methods such as Looking-While-Listening and the Head-Turn Preference procedure to investigate how infants learn languages and how they pick up patterns from the environment.     Summer Research Experience for Underrepresented Minority Students @ CMU

    Program in Interdisciplinary Education Research (PIER) at CMU is pleased to announce its 2017 Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).

    PIER-REU is designed to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities in graduate training programs by providing undergraduate students (mainly juniors and seniors) with research experience during summer. This program allows talented undergraduates to spend 8 weeks during the summer in a research laboratory at CMU.  Each student will receive a fellowship stipend of $3,000 and apartment-style housing will be provided. Guidance and supervision of the research project will be provided by a faculty member as well as, in some cases, a postdoctoral fellow and/or advanced graduate student.  Admitted students will also participate in the Go Research! Summer Program at CMU. This program brings undergraduate researchers from across departments together in apartment-style dorms with resident assistants to facilitate community building, manage housing, and provide programming.   A Summer Seminar Series is provided for all students to help prepare for graduate education and research careers.

    The Center for Social and Cultural Psychology (CSCP) at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium is accepting applications from undergraduates interested in social psychological research for our summer internship program. We have two sessions available. The first session starts May 29th 2017 and ends on July 7th 2017; the second session starts July 31st 2017 and ends on September 8th 2017. A selection process will select the most promising candidates from the applicants for the sessions.

    The University of Leuven is a strong research university in the heart of Europe, two hours from Paris, four hours from London. It is located in the center of the historic town of Leuven, home to the university since 1425. The center includes approx. 17 post docs and Ph.D. students. Full professors in the center are Vera Hoorens, Colette van Laar, Batja Mesquita, Agnes Moors, and Karen Phalet. The research themes in the center include socio-cultural processes of social identity, social inequality and intergroup relations, emotion, motivation and regulatory processes, ethnicity and gender, and diversity in school and work organizations. The Center has an excellent international reputation and extensive international research collaborations with social and cultural psychology groups.     The CSCP summer internship is open to students who are interested in gaining familiarity with and executing social psychological research. Interns will spend approximately 30 hours per week working in close contact with CSCP researchers. Work includes conducting studies with CSCP researchers in the lab and field, literature review, and (basic) data analysis.

    Interns will be provided with access to university facilities, but will be responsible for all other costs (e.g., transportation, travel, and meals).     Berkeley Early Learning Lab Summer Internship Program

    The Berkeley Early Learning Lab (BELL), under the direction of Dr. Fei Xu, is now accepting applications from highly motivated undergraduates and graduating seniors for our Summer Internship Program in 2017. 

    Descriptions of the Program  The goal of this internship is to provide hands on research experience to students interested in pursuing graduate work in Cognitive and Language Development or a related field. Successful applicants will be paired with a graduate student or postdoc mentor and will have the opportunity to conduct research at local children’s museums and in the lab, and collaborate on a variety of on-going and new projects. Our lab uses looking time, eye tracking, free play, intervention, and other behavioral methods to investigate inductive learning and statistical inference in social cognition, category learning, physical reasoning, causal learning, word learning, and other domains.

    In addition to collaboration with individual graduate students and work on specific projects, weekly lab meetings will give interns a chance to present their own work for feedback and provide feedback to others. We will also discuss current papers being published that relate to the lab's projects.

    Eligibilities Berkeley affiliated and Non-Berkeley undergraduates who are interested in developmental psychology and cognitive science are welcome to apply to our summer internship program. Applicants should have some course work in developmental psychology, cognitive science, and programming. Experience working with children is highly desirable. 

    Commitments This is an unpaid internship and requires a commitment of 20-30 hours/week for 8 weeks between June 5 and August 4.
