Causality and Mind Lab at Brown University and Providence Children’s Museum Researcher

The Causality and Mind Lab at Brown University (P.I. David Sobel) and Providence Children’s Museum (PCM) are seeking a Museum Researcher for a National Science Foundation-funded project investigating belief revision in early childhood and children's learning processes. The Museum Researcher will engage in research related to the project as well as serve as a liaison between the Causality and Mind Lab and PCM. The Researcher will also contribute to other Museum-based research projects at PCM.

This is a full-time position at 37.5 hours/week, split between PCM and Brown University; 10 hours/week for PCM and 27.5 hours/week for Brown University.  Benefits are available through Brown University.

The Researcher will manage recruitment, administration and treatment of research participants in accordance with IRB protocols, organize recruiting efforts, research and prepare appropriate experimental materials, collaborate with P.I.s to create coding schemes, and coordinate implementation of coding schemes with project partners.  The Researcher will also liaise between PCM and Brown and communicate project goals and findings.  At PCM, the Museum Researcher will support the Museum’s research agenda, lead evaluation efforts in exhibits and programs, lend expertise to interdepartmental research projects, document research and assist in dissemination.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (required)/Advanced degree (preferred) or equivalent experience in developmental psychology, museum visitor studies, education, cognitive/learning sciences, or related field. Minimum of two years professional experience in informal learning institutions, preferably including children’s museums. Proven ability to apply research to practice. Experience working with statistical and coding software, such as SPSS and datavyu.

This unique opportunity involves more than simply providing child care.  You will receive hands-on training in child development and education and the challenges associated with international adoption and ADHD. The SCIP (social cognition & intergroup processes) Lab, directed by Dr. Sylvia Perry at Northwestern University in the Department of Psychology seeks a full-time (with benefits) lab manager/research technician beginning August or September 2017.

The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility to extend for additional years based on performance and continued funding. The lab manager/research technician will work closely with the PI and lab group to set up the new lab, and to kick-start a research program investigating how social contexts and attitudes affect behavioral and physiological outcomes within intergroup interactions in both adult and child populations.

  • overseeing day-to-day lab operations
  • designing, running, and analyzing experiments with children and adults

Research Coordinator, Duke Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Center

The Duke Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Center has an opening for a research coordinator for studies utilizing TMS to improve cognitive and clinical outcomes. He/she will help coordinate and conduct research programs in the Center addressing cognitive training, motor learning, and clinical parings of TMS with psychiatric therapy. Studies involve combinations of TMS, psychometrics, brain imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG), so knowledge in these fields is desired. Research Assistant Position at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders

The Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (CASD) at Children’s National Health System is seeking applications for a full-time Research Assistant.

Our research program focuses on improving the lives of youth with autism through a range of initiatives related to: gender and autism, health-disparities, and non-social cognitive differences (especially executive function). We develop and test new evaluation methods and cognitive behavioral interventions for autistic youth, and our studies aim to determine which interventions create changes in key outcomes such as classroom behavior and in brain functioning. Our research is interdisciplinary including behavioral, diagnostic, genetic, neuroimaging and endocrine-related methods.

Research Assistants at CASD work collaboratively on a variety of research projects with primary research faculty members, including Dr. Lauren Kenworthy, Dr. John Strang, Dr. Cara Pugliese and Dr. Allison Ratto, the Clinical Research Program Lead, Dr. Alyssa Verbalis, and Outreach Coordinator, Yetta Myrick. All CASD faculty and staff work closely with research assistants to provide supervision on individual projects and mentorship for career goals. Opportunities are provided for authorship of presentations and papers as well as clinical experiences, which can be useful for those intending to apply to graduate school. General responsibilities include child testing, parent interviews, participant recruitment, data collection and management, IRB protocol management, grant preparation, data analysis, and preparation of manuscripts. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of neuroimaging studies from programming experiments and data collection to data analysis.  The lab uses multiple imaging modalities (fMRI, fNIRS) with infants, children and adults. This is an exciting position as the successful candidate will be involved in developing new analyses for fNIRS and conduct neuroimaging recordings with infants in a clinical/hospital setting (e.g., NICU, maternity ward).

Canine Cognition Center at Yale Summer Internship

The Canine Cognition Center at Yale (under the directorship of Dr. Laurie Santos) is seeking curious and motivated college students or recent graduates for our Summer Internship program. Our center studies the cognitive abilities of dogs to better understand the origins of human social cognition.  Interns will aid in planning and carrying out studies with a team of other students while working directly with dogs. They will also work on coding projects and analysis of data, all while having the opportunity to learn new statistical software and video-editing procedures. Interns will also participate in a weekly lab meeting seminar where they can learn more about canine cognition and cognitive development.

Interns will also have several direct opportunities for mentorship and professional development. All interns will collaborate closely with graduate student mentors. Summer interns will also participate in a Professional Development series led by Dr. Santos. These weekly workshops are aimed at helping students prepare for graduate school. Interns will gain practice writing personal statements and learn about graduate applications more broadly.

About us:

The Language Learning Lab at Boston College (L3@BC) opened in January of 2016. Our research sits at the intersection between linguistics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and psychology. Our strategy is to leverage new and emerging technologies to address previously unanswerable scientific questions. Methodologically, the lab uses a number of well-established methods, such as judgment studies, eye-tracking, and ERPs. However, we are particularly interested in exploring and exploiting new and emerging methods. One such method is testing tens or even hundreds of thousands of children and adults over the Internet, and in doing so being able to study questions that were previously out of reach.

The Developmental Social Neuroscience Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking to hire a project assistant to work on an NIH funded study examining social contexts and adolescents’ neurodevelopment.

Our lab examines how social contexts, such as the family and peers, influence adolescent decision making. We use diverse methodological tools, including daily experience sampling, diurnal cortisol, and fMRI. Bergelson Lab seeking undergraduate research assistants

The Bergelson Lab is looking for undergraduate research assistants. The lab (PI Elika Bergelson) studies infant word learning in the context of other aspects of language and cognitive development. RAs will help annotate video and audio recordings of infants in their homes (from the SEEDLingS project), and help schedule and run in-lab visits with families.

Ideal RAs would be good students who are detail oriented, responsible, have taken relevant coursework, and have an interest in cognitive development. Experience with computer programming and statistical analysis is a plus! (R, python, etc). Sophomores and juniors preferred. Yearlong commitment preferred.

The Motivated Cognition and Aging Brain Lab (PI: Samanez-Larkin) is moving from Yale to Duke University in summer 2017 and is seeking 1-2 post-bacc research assistants / project coordinators to begin around August 2017.

Research in the lab is focused on characterizing individual differences across adulthood in the motivational and cognitive processes that support decision making (mcablab.org). Our work combines several disciplines including psychology, behavioral economics/finance, neuroscience, and public health. We use a wide variety of methods including behavioral studies, experience sampling in everyday life, structural and functional MRI, and dopamine PET imaging. We will arrive at Duke with several multimodal imaging data sets that include fMRI and PET so there will be opportunities to get started on data analysis and manuscript preparation right away. 

Responsibilities include subject recruitment, data collection (including behavioral and neuroimaging sessions), data management and analysis, and coordinating lab activities (e.g., schedule lab meetings and social activities, update website). One of these positions may also allocate a small percentage of their time to the coordination of events for three new NIA-funded initiatives: (1) an annual Summer School in Neuroeconomics and Social Neuroscience, (2) the Scientific Research Network on Decision Neuroscience and Aging (srndna.org), and (3) a joint project between the Duke Institute for Brain Science and the Stanford Center on Longevity to connect traditional laboratory research with private sector partners in financial services and health care.

Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic about a science or medical career, self-motivated, independent, creative, and have interests in decision neuroscience and/or life-span development and aging. Individuals with programming (Python preferred) and computational modeling experience will be given high priority but these skills are not required.
