We are happy to announce that Tobias Overath will be joining the Duke Department of Psychology & Neuroscience as an Assistant Professor in summer 2018. Dr. Overath will be part of the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience graduate training program.
Dr. Overath studied musicology and psychology at Humboldt University Berlin and neuroscience at Oxford University, before receiving his PhD from University College London in 2009. Following postdoctoral work at NYU, UCL, and Bonn University, he joined Duke as an Assistant Research Professor in 2014. His research in auditory neuroscience investigates how the human brain processes sound.
The O-Lab uses functional neuroimaging methods (fMRI, EEG, ECoG) and behavioral psychophysics to elucidate the neural underpinnings of sound perception, ranging from pure tones to complex signals such as speech and music. Understanding the roles of the specific brain areas involved when we hear may guide therapies for children with specific language impairment, inform cochlear implant processing strategies, or help advise neurosurgical interventions.
