Clinical Research Assistant – Anesthesia Service

PI: Dr. Karthik Raghunathan

The Institute for Medical Research (IMR), an affiliate of the Durham VA Health Care System (DVAHCS), is looking for a full-time Clinical Research Assistant to implement and execution of a variety of research projects, including subject screening and enrollment for clinical trials, specimen collection and processing, data collection and record administration, and oversight of a number of health services research projects and associated personnel. The position involves a significant amount of flexibility and an ability to manage complex projects conducted by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Karthik Raghunathan, and associates in Anesthesiology Group.

Location:  This position is in-office. This position is located in Durham, North Carolina and candidates must be willing to relocate prior to start date.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensure that Anesthesia Research and Quality Improvement is in Compliance with Durham VA Institutional Review Board Regulations
  • Review electronic & paper medical records for medical data and enter into electronic database
  • Assist in the collection and management of clinical data and source documents for support of analytical and/or research projects
  • Work in compliance with study protocols to Screen, recruit and consent research participants for various clinical trials
  • In collaboration with PI and other staff, oversee progress of trials independently and/or in coordination with a CRO by preparing IRB materials, conducting site visits and interim monitoring, amendments and other protocol changes, adverse event reports and study closures
  • Coordinate and administer the logistical aspects of clinical trials, including collection of clinical data from electronic patient records and clinical specimens according to study protocols
  • Troubleshoot and modify protocol implementation as necessary and appropriate
  • In collaboration with PIs and IMR staff, assist in project budget creation and management, tracking billable events and tracking payments
  • Maintain credentialing and training records for research personnel
  • Assist in arranging research meetings and other communications either in-person or via other electronic means within the VA system and with non-VA collaborators
  • Work effectively with VA populations
  • Work effectively as part of a team
  • Adhere to safety and compliance regulations

Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

Additional Requirements:

  • Basic computer skills are required, with experience using MS Access and MS Excel preferred.
  • Requires an organized, task oriented, deadline-sensitive, individual able to work independently and proactively plan projects and schedule.
  • Must deal diplomatically and professionally with a variety of investigators, clinical and lab personnel, subjects, and administrative staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership, professional initiative and teamwork abilities are required.
  • Prior experience with clinical research, regulatory documentation, basic lab processing skills, and subject screening and consenting is mandatory.
  • They must be detail oriented, organized, and reliable with good communication skills.

  • Prior experience with FDA regulations, HIPAA considerations and consenting process is preferred.
  • Applicants must deal diplomatically and professionally with administration, faculty, clinical and lab personnel, and subjects.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements and activities that are required to perform the essential functions of the position include, but may not be limited to, as follows:  Must be able to occasionally lift, pull and push a minimum of 25 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, squat, kneel, and stoop, regularly use fingers, hands for computer work.

Supervisory Controls: The position of Clinical Research Assistant is under the direct supervisor of the Principal Investigator.

Rate of Pay: $22.00 per hour non-negotiable

Status:  Non-Exempt

Job Type: 30-40 hours/week, some weekend/night hours anticipated

Start Date: Expected start date will be 6-8 weeks after the offer but is somewhat flexible and contingent upon completion and approval of VA paperwork.
