Clinical Research Coordinator, Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development

The Carpenter Lab at the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator to work on an NIH funded 5-year project exploring the intersection between Autism, ADHD, and Anxiety from both a behavioral and a neurobiological perspective. The project involves working in the context of an interdisciplinary team of faculty and staff and direct interaction with children with autism and their families. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Lead day-to-day operations related to a new study investigating the impact of co-occurring ADHD and anxiety symptoms in young children with autism, under the supervision of Dr. Carpenter.

  • Supervision of research assistants, including helping them to prepare the laboratory for clinical assessments, setting up experimental equipment, testing measures, selecting reinforcers prior to assessments, and cleaning materials after each participant is assessed.
  • Oversee and support subject recruitment, subject consenting, and conduct observational assessments, including behavioral assessments, as well as assist with collection of EEG and eye-tracking data.
  • Provide direction to study teams with preparation for study monitoring or study audit visits, and address and correct audit/monitor findings.
  • Maintain subject level documentation for minimal risk studies, or for other studies. Follow procedures and documentation of study payment.
  • Oversee all aspects of regulatory coordination of the study, including submission and maintenance of the IRB protocol and maintenance of regulatory documents. Maintain DOA log. Oversee research assistants in investigating incomplete, inaccurate, or missing data/documents to ensure accuracy and completeness of data; follow SOPs for data quality assurance. Use required processes, policies, and systems to ensure data integrity, provenance, and security.
  • Contribute to data analysis, including scoring tests and measures according to protocol, analyzing neurophysiological data (i.e. EEG and eye-tracking data), and assisting in coding videotapes of participants, as appropriate to role.
  • Coordinating study team meetings. Communicate and coordinate with other study personnel as required for study implementation and routine problem resolution.
  • Participate in the mentorship and supervision of undergraduate and medical student research.
  • Support research faculty in the dissemination of research findings.
  • Assist in any other research-related activities, as assigned by Dr. Carpenter.

This will be a full-time position with benefits. Additionally, the position does require that the individual either live in or move to the Research Triangle (Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill) area of North Carolina by the position start date. Finally, while most study activities will occur during regular office hours, the Clinical Research Coordinator should be available to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
REQUIREMENTS: (1) Excellent interpersonal skills; (2) B.S. or B.A. by hire date in psychology, neuroscience, child development or related field. Masters degree preferred; (3) Minimum of two years of experience in research or an equivalent combination of relevant education/experience; (4) Experience working on projects involving children and families; (5) Excellent attention to detail; (6) Experience with IRB and/or regulatory processes; (7) Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty and staff in a collaborative leadership role with skills in planning and organizing; (8) A passion for contributing to our understanding of autism and related disorders.
Additional consideration will be given to individuals who have prior experience with (1) working with children with autism, (2) conducting behavioral assessments, (3) assisting with EEG and/or eye-tracking data collection or analysis, and/or (4) conducting behavioral coding.
