The Faja and Nelson Labs at the Labs of Cognitive Neuroscience at Boston Children’s Hospital have a student intern position open to assist on a multisite project with 6- to 11-year-old children on the autism spectrum. Responsibilities will include assisting in study visits, behaviorally supporting children on the autism spectrum, collecting surveys from parents, data entry and lab maintenance. Students interns will have the opportunity to learn about electrophysiological data acquisition (EEG and eye tracking), clinical and cognitive assessments, neurodevelopmental disorders, research methodology, and attend seminars on topics such as professional development and atypical child development.

Requirements: Undergraduate student majoring in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, or related field, as well as a part- time spring commitment, with potential for continuing part or full-time in the summer Availability for flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends to facilitate visits with school-aged children Previous experience with children Computer skills including working knowledge of PC and Mac operating systems High level of motivation; ability to work independently and as part of a team; excellent communication, organization, and attention to detail

Internship at the Center for Autism Research (CAR) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Summer Internship at the Center for Autism Research (CAR) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Students will be immersed in an environment of rigorous scientific research and training. As interns at CAR, students will contribute to ongoing scientific efforts focused on quantitative approaches to language, social cognition, and communication (including transcription), gain exposure to a rich array of projects across multiple areas of autism research, and attend lectures and training sessions. Summer interns will work under the supervision of Dr. Julia Parish-Morris and the Motor-Language Lab Research Assistants. The Lab collects, codes, and analyzes data from clinical research participants, with the following goals: identify linguistic markers of ASD; quantify ASD-specific patterns of movement; develop improved screening and treatment tools using advanced behavioral imaging.

The ideal candidate is energetic, diligent, and self-motivated. Applicants with experience in psychology, child development, speech-language pathology, clinical research, computer science, or linguistics are encouraged to apply, as well as applicants from other backgrounds with interest in these areas. The Center for Autism Research values diversity, and encourages applications from individuals that are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, including individuals from different backgrounds, races, ethnic groups, and those from other diverse populations or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Applicants are invited to participate in an internship at CAR as part of an undergraduate course or thesis project, as part of a program with funding through their college or university, and as volunteer interns. Internships are available for year, summer, or academic year intervals. Interns must be available for 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 10 weeks in the summer and a minimum of 10 hours per week for 2 semesters in the school year. Accepted interns will need to be able to complete the CHOP Non-traditional Personnel clearance process, including background checks, FBI fingerprinting, and occupational health screen prior to their start date. Information on how to complete the process will be provided to those selected. Projected summer internship start date is Tuesday, May 29th.

2nd Annual University of Delaware Undergraduate Workshop in Cognitive and Brain Sciences

Are you an undergraduate interested in learning more about cognitive and brain sciences? If so, the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Delaware is holding its 2nd Annual Summer Workshop in Cognitive and Brain Sciences from June 4th-15th, 2018. This program is an intensive workshop for undergraduates who are interested in cognitive research. Participants will engage in immersive training in cognitive and brain sciences, which includes both formal coursework, interactive teaching, and hands-on experience with functional neuroimaging, non-invasive brain stimulation, cognitive neuropsychological research, and more. This program is open to permanent residents and citizens of the United States.

Thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation, travel, tuition, room and board will be provided for the entire two-week program. Furthermore, selected workshop attendees will have the opportunity to engage in cognitive neuroscience research over the entire summer at the University of Delaware. Those students will be provided with a stipend, in addition to workshop expenses.

We encourage all undergraduates with a strong interest in the cognitive and brain sciences to apply. We also encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds to submit applications. Columbia Business School 2018 Summer Internship

Columbia Business School is seeking outstanding applications for the 2018 Summer Research Internship program.  The highly selective program provides an intellectually stimulating environment and introduces the interns to the world of business research.  Under the guidance of Columbia Business School’s leading faculty, interns will take an active role on a research project in one of the following areas: accounting, economics, finance, marketing, management, decision sciences, operations, and data analytics.  This is a multi-disciplinary program and candidates from all majors are encouraged to apply.

2018 Summer Internship at the Boston University Developing Minds Lab

The Developing Minds Lab at Boston University, under the direction of Dr. Melissa Kibbe, is seeking excellent undergraduates for our summer internship program. Research in the Developing Minds Lab focuses on the the development of object, numerical, and social cognition in infants, children, and adults. 

Summer interns will be involved in every aspect of the research, from scheduling participants to running studies to coding and analyzing data. Interns will also have the opportunity to read and discuss the relevant literature, and to present their work in lab meetings. Interns will gain valuable research experience in a dynamic (and fun!) lab environment.

The program begins the first week of June and runs through the end of July (with the option to extend through August). Interns will work 35-40 hours/week. Applicants should be highly motivated and have a background in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, or a related field. Summer Research Opportunity in Dan Gilbert's Lab at Harvard University

Daniel Gilbert's lab at Harvard University is accepting applications for volunteer research assistants for summer 2018. The program provides hands-on experience in all aspects of the research process, including idea generation and development, study design, data collection, and statistical analysis. Ongoing research in the lab currently focuses on affective forecasting, altruism, advice, judgment and decision-making, and biases and errors in conversation and social interaction. 

Interns work approximately 35 hours per week from early June to mid-August. The ideal candidate is a motivated undergraduate or recent graduate with a keen interest in social psychology. Previous research experience is an asset, but not a requirement.

Summer Internship: Temple University Infant & Child Lab

The Temple Infant & Child Lab is offering summer internships to bright, energetic students who are eager to peer into the world of child development. Directed by Professors Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Nora Newcombe, the lab conducts both theoretical and applied research on language acquisition, spatial learning, memory development, and playful learning in children aged 5 months to 8 years.

Summer interns will receive hands-on experience in every step of the research process. Each intern will work on one or two research projects and will be paired with a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow mentor who will serve as a resource for questions about their areas of research and graduate school. Summer interns will receive a stipend of $1000. The internship will take place over 8 weeks during the summer of 2018.

Duties may include:

  • Recruiting and scheduling lab participants
  • Assisting with stimuli design and creation
  • Conducting studies with children in the lab or in local preschools
  • Coding and analyzing data
  • Discussing relevant journal articles in lab meetings

Undergraduate Summer Workshop in Interdisciplinary Mind and Brain Studies at the University of Pennsylvania

The human capacity for complex language is unique within the animal kingdom, and psychologists have long appreciated how the languages we learn can shape our patterns of thought in subtle ways. Language science fosters collaboration between researchers in cognitive science, computer linguistics, psycholinguistics, and phonetics to drive research in language acquisition and use. This research aims to develop and improve language and speech technologies (e.g., automatic speech recognition, translation, and transcription). In addition, this research can develop computational tools to learn more about how the human brain works and how science understands social groups.

A related question at the interface of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities is whether an understanding of the mind at the individual level will lead to a deeper understanding of the behaviors of a group. Research about social behavior and decision-making provides an important source of insight into the philosophical questions of mind, identity, and social organization. The development of new analytical, computational, and experimental tools is enhancing our understandings of individuals, societies, and their creations. These newest scientific frontiers seek to understand the nature of human intelligence in its broadest sense.

In this year’s Undergraduate Summer Workshop, lectures will focus on Language Science and Technology (one week) and Social and Behavioral Science (one week). Social and Decision Science topics are likely to include cultural and evolutionary behavior, economic preferences and biases, social choices and decision-making, and reflective and intuitive thinking. Language Science topics may include how children learn the meanings of words and the grammar of their language, how language and dialects change over time, and how the mind represents language.

Summer Workshop participants will receive free room and board, plus a travel stipend.

As a participant, you can:

  • Hear lectures from distinguished researchers in social and decision sciences and language science and technology
  • Participate in labs and lab tours involving some of the latest technologies and research methods
  • Participate in panel discussions on the future of interdisciplinary mind and brain studies, as well as career and professional development in these fields.

  • You are currently an enrolled undergraduate at any university or college

UC Berkeley Language and Cognitive Development Lab 2018 Summer Internship

The Language and Cognitive Development Lab at UC Berkeley, under the direction of Prof. Mahesh Srinivasan, is now accepting applications for their summer internship. The goal of this program is to provide a comprehensive, hands-on research experience to highly motivated students, while making valuable contributions to cognitive science.

Our lab explores how linguistic, cognitive, and social abilities arise during human development. A central goal of our research is exploring how these different aspects of development interact with one another. Interns will work closely with the lab manager, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and each other, and will meet with professor Srinivasan on a regular basis. Interns will be involved in many facets of the research process, such as: assisting with data collection, working on stimuli creation and preparation of study materials, reading relevant theoretical and empirical papers, recruiting participants, and processing or analyzing data. Interns will also have the opportunity to test participants at preschools or children's museums in the Bay Area. Lastly, interns will attend weekly lab meetings and reading groups to discuss the theory behind research projects, and will have the opportunity to present on the projects they are assigned at during the internship. We hope that interns will come away from these activities with an enriched understanding of language and cognitive development.

The Culture Lab at the University of Maryland is seeking a full-time lab manager to assist Dr. Michele J. Gelfand (http://www.gelfand.umd.edu/) coordinate and conduct studies. The lab focuses on cross-cultural research on the strength of norms, conflict, negotiation, revenge, and forgiveness using experimental, field, neuroscience, and computational methods, with a focus on the U.S., Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and manage research assistants and lab schedule
  • Recruit and schedule community samples and participants from the department pool

Research Assistant Position: TReAD Lab, Emory University

Position Description:  A Research Assistant/Interviewer position will be available starting winter/early spring of 2018 in the Translational Research in Affective Disorders Laboratory in the Department of Psychology at Emory University. The Research Interviewer will assist with all aspects of the research process (designing/programming experiments, recruiting/running participants, analyzing behavioral and neuroimaging data). This is an excellent position for anyone seeking research experience and training in clinical and cognitive neuroscience before applying to graduate programs.

Preferred Qualifications: A bachelor's degree or higher in cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, psychology, math, biology, or other related field. Strong computer programming skills (especially MATLAB and/or Python) are required. Candidate should be self-motivated, independent, and reliable. Strong organizational and communication skills are also essential. Prior experience in human affective, clinical or cognitive neuroscience (e.g., conducting and analyzing fMRI or MRI studies), behavioral experiment administration, IRB management, or clinical interviewing experience will all be viewed positively, but are not required. A two-year commitment is required.

What is the R&D Manager's role?

As R&D Manager, you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of behavioral and psychometric data collection in the LenddoEFL application, including feature engineering, usability and UX design, and other advancements in LenddoEFL’s use of its proprietary data for prediction purposes. You will manage a small team of specialists – in behavioral science and psychometrics research, quantitative data analysis/programming, and design – driving the next generation of features that advance LenddoEFL’s prediction capabilities. You will also own LenddoEFL’s external research partnerships with leading advisors in the field. These relationships provide a platform for incubating new R&D ideas and translating them into usable modules that generate features that predict credit risk.

Primary responsibilities:

Advance the role of applied behavioral science research in LenddoEFL’s product development

  • Deepen and initiate relationships with third-party behavioral science and psychometrics researchers.
  • Identify, select, and recruit independent consultants for tactical engagements to validate behavioral and psychometric concepts and methodologies.
  • Manage ideation, design, and development of field-based validation of new module prototypes; write technical documentation on new modules and features to hand off to Product and Engineering teams. Co-manage new module development timelines with product team leaders.

Manage the R&D Team

  • Manage daily tasks, goal setting, performance, and professional development of all members of R&D Team; foster collaborative environment among team members and develop their strengths.
  • Work with Chief Analytics Officer and rest of executive leadership team on behavioral science and psychometrics roadmapping/planning and in new module and feature development; own execution of team goals against R&D roadmap.

Lead R&D data analytics

  • Design and manage collaboration between members of R&D team to develop and validate predictive features (variables, indices, and traits) in LenddoEFL datasets based on expert knowledge of the behavioral science behind user interactions with LenddoEFL’s modules.
  • Design and implement a strategy to make Feature Engineering a repeatable, efficient team function; manage development roadmap of LenddoEFL Score Confidence system to protect data quality via real-time flagging system.
  • Prioritize and manage ad-hoc exploratory analyses on new data sets for trends and potential predictive power, in accordance with business objectives and R&D roadmap.

Advance and maintain behavioral module definitions

  • Continue to standardize LenddoEFL application design decisions; provide critical input and materials to Global Delivery Team to determine behavioral module design for new and existing partner launches.
  • Ensure timely and accurate communication of technical specifications of new behavioral content modules, definition of raw data structure and terminology to Product, Engineering, Global Delivery, and Marketing teams.

The Duke Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Center has an opening for a research coordinator for studies utilizing TMS to improve cognitive and clinical outcomes. Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Child Development’s annual Summer Internship Program.  Summer interns will receive close mentorship by faculty, post docs, and graduate students, and will learn all aspects of cognitive development research.  Under the direction of Drs. Lisa Feigenson and Justin Halberda, the Lab is currently investigating a range of issues including memory development, numerical abilities, logical reasoning, and language acquisition, in populations including young infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults.

Summer interns participate fully in all aspects of research, including recruiting participants, testing infants and children in behavioral tasks, coding children’s testing sessions, analyzing data, and interpreting results.  Interns also participate in guided readings of developmental literature, and attend laboratory meetings in which we discuss ongoing projects or current issues in the field of cognitive development.  Students will work primarily in the Psychological & Brain Sciences building of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland, and may also work at our testing site at the Maryland Science Center at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. 

2018 will be the 13th year of our annual summer program, which has been enormously successful in instilling students with a love of basic research, preparing them for graduate study, and forming friendships that last well beyond the duration of the program.

Summer interns have daily contact with children and their parents, and as such must be mature, articulate, and comfortable communicating with others.  Successful candidates will also be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for the research being conducted, a strong work ethic, and an excellent academic record.  Desirable background experience includes coursework in developmental and/or experimental psychology, computer skills, an ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment, and previous research experience.

The 2018 Program will begin on Monday, June 4 and will end on Friday, July 27 and will be full-time (roughly 9AM to 5PM, with some flexibility).  Interns will receive either course credit or a stipend.

The candidate will be involved in interdisciplinary studies investigating the behavioral and developmental characteristics of autism spectrum disorder in children, adolescents, and young adults. This position will be integral for the daily operation of a clinical cognitive neuroscience laboratory. General responsibilities include:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, human development, neurobiology, physiology, and behavior (NPB), biological sciences, or a related field by hiring date (students graduating in spring of 2018 are encouraged to apply) • GPA of 3.5/4.0 or higher • Experience in a clinical, psychology, or neuroscience research laboratory • Experience working with children, experience working with children/adults with neurodevelopmental disorders, and/or a strong desire to work with and learn more about individuals with autism spectrum disorder

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey information and work effectively with lab members • Excellent social skills to facilitate communication with children, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder and their families • Detail oriented with exceptional organizational skills to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines • Tracking and record-keeping skills • Writing skills including accurate grammar, spelling, and punctuation sufficient to create and edit documents

2018 Summer Internship at Johns Hopkins Lab for Child Development

WANT RESEARCH IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT? Announcing the 2018 Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Child Development Summer Internship Program   Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Child Development’s annual Summer Internship Program.  Summer interns will receive close mentorship by faculty, post docs, and graduate students, and will learn all aspects of cognitive development research.  Under the direction of Drs. Lisa Feigenson and Justin Halberda, the Lab is currently investigating a range of issues including memory development, numerical abilities, logical reasoning, and language acquisition, in populations including young infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults.   Summer interns participate fully in all aspects of research, including recruiting participants, testing infants and children in behavioral tasks, coding children’s testing sessions, analyzing data, and interpreting results.  Interns also participate in guided readings of developmental literature, and attend laboratory meetings in which we discuss ongoing projects or current issues in the field of cognitive development.  Students will work primarily in the Psychological & Brain Sciences building of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland, and may also work at our testing site at the Maryland Science Center at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.  2018 will be the 13th year of our annual summer program, which has been enormously successful in instilling students with a love of basic research, preparing them for graduate study, and forming friendships that last well beyond the duration of the program.   Summer interns have daily contact with children and their parents, and as such must be mature, articulate, and comfortable communicating with others.  Successful candidates will also be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for the research being conducted, a strong work ethic, and an excellent academic record.  Desirable background experience includes coursework in developmental and/or experimental psychology, computer skills, an ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment, and previous research experience.   The 2018 Program will begin on Monday, June 4 and will end on Friday, July 27 and will be full-time (roughly 9AM to 5PM, with some flexibility).  Interns will receive either course credit or a stipend.   To apply, please email a completed application (available on the lab website), cover letter explaining your interest in and qualifications for the position, unofficial academic transcript, and two letters of recommendation to:  jhulcdapplications@gmail.com   The deadline for applications is Friday February 23, 2018.  Candidates will be notified of decisions at the end of March. Research Specialist (i.e., lab manager/coordinator) Princeton Baby Lab

The Department of Psychology at Princeton University is seeking a full-time research specialist (i.e., lab manager/coordinator) to work in the Princeton Baby Lab under the supervision of Dr. Casey Lew-Williams. The successful candidate will have frequent contact with postdocs, graduate students, senior thesis students, and research assistants, as well as Dr. Lauren Emberson, Dr. Adele Goldberg, and Dr. Uri Hasson. Targeted start date is June 1, 2018 (but mid/late June is possible).

Responsibilities:

The research specialist will participate in all aspects of projects on early learning in infants and toddlers, with a particular focus on language. Participants in our studies include typically developing children, Spanish/English bilingual children, and children growing up in low-income households. 90% of work will take place on Princeton’s campus, and 10% of work will take place in our community lab in nearby Trenton, NJ. Primary responsibilities will include:

- Testing young children using various research methods, such as eye tracking and fNIRS

- Coordinating participant recruitment in Princeton and Trenton

- Developing stimuli for experiments

- Mentoring undergraduates

- Setting up and maintaining operations of the lab through general administrative duties

- Conducting a study of your own (or two!)

Essential qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, communication sciences and disorders, or related cognitive science fields

- Have a demonstrated interest in cognitive science

- Be able to write very clearly for any audience

- Be able to jump from low- to high-level work, and back again

- Get along well with other people

- Have excellent communication skills with young children and families

- Be able to get tasks done efficiently

- Be detail-oriented, motivated, creative, organized, and able to work independently

Join us at Stanford for an interdisciplinary summer research experience program in the cognitive sciences!

At the Center for the Study of Language and Information, interns will work closely with a faculty, postdoc, or grad student mentor on an original cognitive science research project. They will gain experience developing the project, collecting data, and analyzing the results. In addition to their individual projects, interns will attend weekly mentorship meetings and seminars with such topics as reading a scientific paper, introduction to data analysis, statistics and visualization, and presentation skills. The program will culminate with each intern presenting their work to an interdisciplinary audience. Accepted students will receive on-campus room and board, and a stipend to cover travel, and other expenses.

The topical focus of the program will be on language, learning, computation, and cognition, with an emphasis on giving students the skills they need to complete an independent project. Mentors will be from cognitive science departments across Stanford, including psychology, linguistics, computer science, and philosophy.

The program is 8 weeks, from 6/25/18 - 8/17/18, and is primarily intended for rising college Juniors and Seniors, though we will consider other applicants as well. Applications are due by midnight on February 16, 2018. One goal of the internship is to increase the diversity of the graduate school pipeline, and we therefore especially encourage applicants who come from groups that are historically underrepresented in research careers, such as Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander, and first-generation college students. Yale Computation and Cognitive Development Lab Summer Internship 2018

The Computation and Cognitive Development Lab (CCDL), run by Dr. Julian Jara-Ettinger, studies the cognitive building blocks of our ability to make sense of and navigate the social and physical world. Previous and current research in the lab has examined topics such as children’s understanding of fairness, luck, and knowledge. More information about our research can be found at http://www.compdevlab.com   We are seeking undergraduate interns to participate first hand in our research studies. Summer interns will have the chance to take part in all aspects of the research process, and will help recruit and test participants ages three to eight, learn to design and run studies, and code and analyze results. In addition, interns will have the chance to attend lab meetings, participate in reading groups, and join graduate students, interns, and other researchers in the Yale psychology department for social activities including bowling, trivia nights, and dinners.    Interns will work 30-40 hours per week. This internship is best suited for students interested in or studying developmental or cognitive psychology, or cognitive sciences. Students are encouraged to apply for funding from their home institution, but internal funding is available on a need basis. A full-time research assistant (lab manager) is sought for the labs of Dr. Pearl Chiu, Dr. Brooks King-Casas, and Dr. Stephen LaConte at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (http://research.vtc.vt.edu). Projects in the labs combine methods from experimental and clinical psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics with functional neuroimaging to investigate decision-making in healthy and clinical populations (focusing on adults with mood, anxiety, personality, or substance-use disorders, and at-risk youth). The research assistant will be responsible for recruiting and assessing research participants, implementing all aspects of study protocols, and maintaining positive communication with research participants and collaborators. Data collection involves various modalities including: behavior, fMRI, clinical interviews, genetic samples. Additional duties include managing participant databases, organizing project funds, and preparing and tracking IRB protocols. The research assistant is an essential member of the group and will be generally responsible for having overall knowledge of all lab projects and managing day-to-day logistics of ongoing lab projects. Training will be provided for all aspects of the position. For motivated individuals, there are many opportunities to be involved with data analysis. This is an excellent position for candidates interested in graduate school in cognitive or clinical psychology, neuroscience, and related fields. Preference will be given to candidates who are willing to make a two-year commitment.

Minimum requirements include:

1) BA/BS in psychology, biology, engineering, or related field;

2) two years of research experience;

3) ability to work both independently and as part of a team;

4) demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail;

5) demonstrated ability and desire to succeed in a fast-paced research environment with multiple concurrent duties;

6) excellent written and oral communication skills;

7) proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or equivalent.

Other information:

MA/MS candidates with clinical (clinical psychology, psychiatry) training will be considered; salary will be commensurate with experience. Candidates with data analysis and/or computer programming experience will be considered favorably.
