Some of the services the librarian provides include the following:
- Purchasing all print and online materials in the library for their subject area. If there is a specific topic in which a faculty member is doing research, the subject liaison can purchase more books, journals, online databases or other materials in this area.
- Providing instruction to students either in the classroom or individually on how to use the library catalog, databases, and other tools to do their research.
- Working with undergraduate honors researchers to help them find materials for their theses and to orient them to services such as interlibrary loan, extended loan periods, or the undergraduate honors researchers group study room.
- Working with faculty to ensure that materials for classes have been purchased, such as materials that are going to be put on reserve
- Helping faculty negotiate the library services, such as reserves or interlibrary loan.
- Providing research consultations to undergraduate and graduate students
- Providing assistance with Sakai, Duke's course management tool (see: https://sakai.duke.edu/portal/)
