Professors Jay Van Bavel & Madalina Vlasceanu are currently seeking a Junior Laboratory Associate (Lab Manager) to begin in August 2022, for a one-year commitment (with the possibility of extension). The Junior Laboratory Associate will work in Jay Van Bavel’s Social Identity & Morality Lab and Madalina Vlasceanu’s Collective Cognition Lab (both are located in the NYU Psychology Department in NYC). The Junior Laboratory Associate will work closely with Drs. Van Bavel and Vlasceanu and their lab groups, to coordinate and conduct research studies related to human groups using a combination of behavioral, computational, and neuroscience methods.
The Junior Laboratory Associate will play an integral role in promoting a collaborative lab culture and ensuring the overall success of the labs and their research programs. Responsibilities will include: managing laboratory activities, such as planning events and meetings; maintaining laboratory computers and equipment; maintaining the lab websites, managing lab social media accounts and newsletters; onboarding and supervising research assistants; ensuring ethics and open science compliance; managing finances and grants; preparing stimuli; programming experimental tasks; processing and analyzing data; reviewing literature; creating figures; and editing manuscripts, grants, and page proofs. The Junior Laboratory Associate will also have the opportunity to participate in the broader intellectual community in the New York University Department of Psychology and Social Psychology Program. The Junior Laboratory Associate will meet at least once a week with both Drs. Van Bavel & Vlasceanu and work half time in each lab.
Qualifications
This position is open to candidates who are currently completing or have completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology, computer science, neuroscience, or a related discipline. Previous experience conducting research in social psychology or cognitive science is highly desired. Candidates should possess excellent writing skills, and a preference will be given to applicants with coding proficiency in R or Python. Preference will also be given to applicants with experience and/or interest in science communication. Above all, we seek a candidate who is self-motivated, highly organized, and a good team player who will strive to foster a positive and productive lab environment. The ideal candidate will also make creative contributions to the research program and, as such, have opportunities to co-author manuscripts resulting from the research. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience. This position is especially desirable for someone who seeks to eventually pursue a career in psychological science or pursue graduate studies (previous lab managers subsequently went into graduate programs at Stanford, UChicago, Princeton and Columbia).
