Lab Manager Position—University of Rochester Psychology

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Lab Manager will coordinate and oversee the daily operations of a lab focused on understanding young children’s thinking about the social world (for more information about ongoing research, see: https://isobelheck.weebly.com/). Responsibilities include creating and maintaining systems for participant recruitment and data management; hiring, onboarding, and supervising undergraduate research assistants; coordinating recruitment and testing for both in-person and online research studies with children ages 3 to 12 and adults; developing partnerships with schools, museums, camps, and other community centers; coordinating lab meetings and activities; assisting with data analysis and the preparation of research publications and grants; overseeing lab communications (social media, newsletters, website); purchasing equipment and research supplies; and collaborating with other labs, the University of Rochester IRB, and administrative partners. The Lab Manager will report directly to the PI of the lab and will work closely with the PI to support the launch of a brand-new lab space and research group. This position allows for considerable mentorship and research training and offers opportunities for working on independent research projects, contributing to ongoing research collaborations, and attending or presenting at scientific conferences. The position requires strong organizational, communicative, and interpersonal skills; the ability to work both independently and collaboratively; outstanding attention to detail; and comfort interacting with children, parents, and people from diverse backgrounds.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Hiring, onboarding, and overseeing a team of undergraduate research assistants.
- Administrative management of lab and research projects. Includes writing and preparing IRB protocols and amendments; monitoring project budgets and participant reimbursement; purchasing and implementing research equipment and supplies.
- Coordination of recruitment and testing for both in-person and online studies with children and adults. Includes developing and maintaining a system for tracking and scheduling participating families; developing partnerships with schools, museums, camps, and other community centers; and assisting with the testing of ongoing research studies both in-person and online.
- Contributing to the design and development of research projects. Includes developing experimental stimuli and materials; managing data; creating data analysis pipelines; proofreading research publications and grants; and the opportunity to pursue independently driven research projects
- Managing lab communications including via social media, lab website, newsletters, and other community forums.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- At least 1 to 2 years of research experience — ideally in psychology, cognitive science, or a related field — or equivalent combination of education and experience
PREFERRED:
- The ideal candidate will have experience working with young children and/or families.
- The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about developmental research; and has: the ability to effectively juggle multiple research projects at different stages of development; outstanding attention to detail; strong organizational, communicative, and interpersonal skills; and the ability to work both independently and with diverse collaborative teams.
- Valued skills and abilities include:
- Experience working with children in classroom or community settings
- Experience/interest in working with children and families from diverse backgrounds
- Experience conducting research in a lab setting
- Proficiency with Google drive/docs/calendar, Zoom, Word, Excel
- Experience with Qualtrics, MTurk, Prolific, and other online testing platforms
- Some programming and/or statistical skills (e.g., R, JASP, SPSS)
- Coursework in statistics and research methods
