Research Assistant Position in the Department of Psychology @ UCLA

The Culture and Race Ethnicity (CARE) in Youth Mental Health Lab is hiring a research assistant to contribute to the conduct of community-based intervention/ implementation trials focused on advancing youth mental health equity.  Under the direct supervision of Dr. Anna Lau, the research assistant will work on two studies funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

SAFETY-A in Schools is an R34 funded feasibility trial that will adapt Safe Alternatives For Teens and Youth – Acute (SAFETY-A) for implementation in low-resourced school districts to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in mental health service use following identification of suicide risk in youth. This study is being conducted by Dr. Anna Lau and Dr. Joan Asarnow at UCLA, and Dr. David Goldston at Duke University Medical School.

 

Project STRIVE (STudents RIsing aboVE) is an R37-funded prevention trial that will examine the role of emotion regulation strategies in driving health disparities among racial/ethnic minority youth.  We will test a whether a tailored mindfulness intervention can interrupt the links between a ‘striving persistent behavioral style’ and disparate health outcomes among high-achieving racial/ethnic minority students. This study is being conducted by Dr. Anna Lau and Dr. Han Du at UCLA, Dr. Joey Fung at Fuller Theological Seminary, Dr. Stacey Doan at Claremont McKenna College, and Dr. Farzana Saleem at Stanford University. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Data collection with study participants in public schools and community sites
  • General project tasks including data tracking, preparing study materials, literature searches, report preparation, routine IRB correspondence

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, or related field
  • Research methods training, mentored research experience, or equivalent 
  • Bilingual Spanish-speaking

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in youth mental health disparities, intervention science, and dissemination and implementation research. Strong applicants will have previous experience as a research assistant, excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, and a demonstrated interest in mental health equity.
