Research Specialist Position @ University of South Carolina, Columbia SC

The research specialist will work with the faculty principal investigator and grant staff to assist with NIH-funded research by conducting assessments on early development in infants and toddlers with neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., Down syndrome) using multiple developmental, physiological, and language measures. This position also assists with data management, preparing summary reports for families, preparing assessment materials and community outreach events. Travel across the Southeast United States is required. This position is ideal for someone planning to apply to PhD programs in Communication Sciences, Clinical or School Psychology, Human Development and Family Sciences, or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • 40% - Conducts assessments and collects data. They administer developmental and behavioral assessments reliably and according to standardized procedures. Travel is an essential function as assessments are conducted across the Southeastern United States.
  • 25% - Manages data, including scoring reports, entering data, calculating reliability, reporting data summaries, and ensuring data is entered in a consistent and timely manner.
  • 15% - Conducts pre- and post-assessment duties weekly, including preparing measures for assessments, mailing protocols and forms to families, and processing completed data. They score and summarize assessment data through feedback reports. These duties involve providing oversight to undergraduate student research assistants and promoting the accuracy and efficiency of the research.
  • 10% - Contributes, as needed, to professional presentations and articles. This includes summarizing data, conducting literature searches, creating posters, and presenting findings at academic conferences.
  • 10% - Follows and ensures compliance with federal, state, and university policies and procedures as needed and completes other duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Human Development and Family Studies, Communication Sciences and Disorders, or an allied health major (e.g., Public Health, Pre-Med, Pre-OT, Pre-PT), or the ability to obtain a degree prior to position start date.
  • Strong organization, communication skills, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail are necessary for success in this position.
  • At least one year of prior experience working in a research lab or with children

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with families, infants, and toddlers, or children with neurodevelopmental conditions and developmental delays is strongly preferred.
