Position Description
Overview:
Dr. Pamela Morris-Perez is seeking part-time Research Assistants based in California to support her team starting this Fall 2022 as part of her newly-launched center, ARCADIA (A Research Center for Adolescent Interconnected Approaches) for Suicide Prevention. This position will primarily involve data collection for a research collaboration with a school-based mental health/suicide prevention program in California called “Directing Change.” In Directing Change, students make short films as part of a statewide film contest, with potential impacts on suicide risk particularly for Latinx and LGBTQ+ youth. By working as a research assistant (RA) on this project, you will have the opportunity to engage directly with the data collection efforts for this program across high schools in California (see regions outlined in the below map).
Our research team is committed to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we recognize that contributions to diversity and inclusion may take many forms. This includes efforts to: create opportunities for members of historically and presently marginalized groups; engage with underserved communities; contribute diversity of thought and perspective in the conduct of research; increase inclusion and equity within organizations or the local community. We especially encourage individuals with relevant work and/or lived experience in the marginalized communities that are the focus of this project to apply.
Here is what the Fall 2022 position will entail:
September: RAs will attend two-days (up to 16 hours) worth of virtual training with the NYU project staff regarding survey administration to high school students prior to their involvement in the Directing Change program and film contest.
October-November: RAs will administer tablet-based surveys in multiple high schools across California, contributing directly to valid and reliable data collection efforts.
RAs will also meet regularly (virtually) with NYU project staff and will be given regular feedback on their performance. This position is a short-term, part-time opportunity (between 5-10 hours per week), though the exact hours will fluctuate week-to-week and depend on the proximity of participating high schools in their area. RAs must be willing to arrange their own transportation to local high schools, although public transportation and gas mileage will be reimbursed beyond local travel. This position is expected to span September through November 2022, with the potential opportunity to be hired in the future for additional data collection phases.
Compensation:
The pay rate is $22 per hour. This part-time position represents a wonderful opportunity for anyone looking to engage in research and be an essential part of an effort to evaluate an innovative youth suicide prevention and mental health program for high school students.
