Being a Psychology graduate from Duke played a pivotal role in shaping my professional success. As an undergraduate psych major, I was able to engage in a variety of research-related activities ranging from being a research assistant in psychology labs to eventually becoming an honors student and developing my own independent project that culminated in an honors thesis. It was through these experiences that I decided to pursue a doctoral degree in Psychology focused primarily on research in clinical psychology. I pursued my degree and have been conducting research as a postdoctoral fellow ever since. I firmly believe I would have never (a) known this career is what I wanted to do and (b) been prepared to succeed in graduate school without all the great opportunities offered to me by the Duke Psychology program.
Take time to explore all the opportunities offered by the Duke Psychology undergraduate program! If you're interested in learning more about research, try applying for a research assistantship in a lab. If you're interested in conducting your own research, consider doing an independent project/honors thesis. Take advantage of your major advisor as well to learn more about opportunities in the field and how you can prepare for them.
